Vertical lines, or ridges, can also be genetic. These ridges are actually the rails and grooves upon which the nail plate rides forward, much like a train rides forward on its tracks. The rails are on the surface of the nail bed, and the grooces are on the underside of the nail plate. If the nail plate becomes severly dehydrated, these ridges can appear. They will also appear due to genetics or due to aging. Since you have had them since ever you can remember, check with your parents and grandparents to see if they have them as well. If not, you may want to ask your physician if they could be a health related symptom.
