Really concerned!! Need help now - Nail Problems Message Board

About a week ago the base of one of my fingernails began to peel off. Right where the cuticle meets the nail. Now the whole bottom half of my nail is gone and it is very tender. I really got concerned yesterday when I found the same thing happening to a nail on the other hand. Can anyone tell me what this is and if my nails will grow back or even look normal again? I have never had any problems with my nails and this is really made me concerned.

sounds like a possible fungal infection. Go to a dermatologist.

I thought that it may be a fungal infection, but there is no discoloration of the nail and the rest of the nail that is still there is strong and very healthy. It is only tender if I push on the part where there is no nail, but it has no pain whatsoever. Could it still be fungal?

I would definitely go to a doctor. Whether it is fungal or not it is definitely opening up a possibility for infection.

Marti, could probably tell you exactly what it is and I am sure she will be glad to help you out as soon as she checks in here but you could do a search for her site and search for some answers there yourself if you are like me an can't rest without some answers.

If I were you I would definitely get some opinions from a doctor though. Good luck. I hope it isn't anything serious.
