Bluedog,

Actually Kefir has been known and considered by many legends to be the ancient Biblical Manna. If you have the grains you can get a constant supply FOREVER.

Lenin knows a great deal about Kefir. Very interesting tha it is helping your toenail fungus. I love yogurt and actually one should eat some every day. It is like adding yeast to a septic tank (our gut).

Just a follow up: My toenails are growing in pink and look healthy. I put two drops of vinegar morning and night and have been drinking 8 oz. of kefir a day. I don't know whether it's the vinegar or kefir, but it's working! One nail is 2/3 clear, the other is a little less. I have been applying the vinegar to all my nails and have noticed that the white tips are turning whiter, especially on the unaffected nails. Apparently the vinegar is changing the ph of the nails, which is what I have read. I'm leaving for the bahamas next week, but will NOT be polishing my nails. Oh well.... Slip on sandals for me!

Since iv'e been using the vinegar on my toenail it has turned my whole nail yellow. Are you supposed to use the distilled vinegar or the apple cidar?

I use distilled vinegar--the cheap stuff--69 cents a bottle.

Looks like I am going to try Kefir as well....I eat yogurt but sporatically..oddy enough my nails seem to get better and worse sporatically. You can read my post "Koilonychia or Fungus? - Very Painful"

I will post as soon as I can tell a difference.

Blue dog...what were the side effects of lamisil. I have the same problem that you did. I heard that putting vicks vapor rub on it would help. I have been doing this for a month and no change. I have not gone to a doctor yet, but it would be interesting to know the side effects that you found out. I think I am going to try the yogart thing.

Thanks

Blue,

It's been a few months since you've written about your progress. How does your nail look, now??

There are a # of side effects. The one that concerned me the most was the potential for liver damage or liver failure. It's stated that in rare cases people have had liver damage or failure. I just didn't want to take a drug that could have potential to damage my liver. Your doctor should test your liver to make sure it's healthy. People with a "sick" liver are more at risk. Besides, I try to avoid drugs if at all possible.
Any luck with the vapor rub and have you tried getting probiotics in your diet?
I'll post my progress in my response to the next question.

I'm sorry that I have not given an update. Well, my nail still looks good but not as good as it should. Here's what happened...
When I began my experiment, I was eating 2 yogurts per day and later added kefir. By the way, I tried a different brand of kefir thinking all kefir tasted similiar...not true! Lifeway brand is so much better tasting than Helios.
Ok, back to the story. So, at that time my nail was looking great and improving every day until finally, it had grown 95% perfect - no white marks - completely smooth. About that time, I took a trip to LA and then Maui. That's when I broke my routine of taking in probiotics (yogurt and kefir). Besides, my nail was looking great, so I thought I was safe by missing my daily intake of probiotics. Since I've been back from trip (5 weeks now), my nail is starting to show some white marks. It's still looks great, but showing some white marks. Lately, I've only been eating 1 yogurt about every other day. Here's my conclusion: My nail is regressing b/c I've been missing my intake of daily probiotics. So, I'm going to restart my intake of probiotics and post later with my progress.
Has anyone else tried my suggestion and had any progress?

It might help...it certainly couldn't hurt. Try to eat at least 2 good quality yogurts per day. Good luck and report back.

Re: I might have the answer for toenail fungus, but don't get excited yet...

I drink kefir every morning, and eat good quality yorgurt and take acdepholus (sp?) I have been doing it daily for almost three weeks.

Here is my honest opinion. I am doing the kefir/yogurt thing on the advice of my physician, to prevent yeast infections. If many dr's say it will prevent/help yeast infections, then I can see that it might help toenail fungus also.

My tonails still look bad, I am using vinegar on them also (strangely enough Dr's recommend vinegar for yeast infections), and I do have one toe I am finally seeing pink on. I cannot say for sure if it is the vinegar or the kefir, or maybe both, but I think something is working.

I also agree, not all kefir is created equal, I prefer Lifeway it is tasty!

I will report back if I have anymore progress.

Re: I might have the answer for toenail fungus, but don't get excited yet...

I have toenail fungus as well. I think I got it from an injury to my toe while playing hockey - the injury caused my toenail to fall out and when it grew back it didn't look normal. I didn't think anything of it until I noticed that both of my big toes and second toes had this strange look. I went to see a foot specialist and he prescribed Penlac. I tried this for about 9 months or so and it didn't seem to do any good. Then I went to my family doctor and he prescribed Lamisil. This seemed to have killed the fungus in the nail bed but the nails on both my big toes still looks bad. It could be from filing the nails down. I have been soaking my feet in vinager and putting tea tree oil on them every day. How long does it take for a toe nail to grow out? Is there anything that I can do to speed the process up? Will the yogurt help clear the colour up a little more? I would really like to not have to wear socks and shoes in the summer. I want to wear sandles but I don't want anyone to see my feet. Any suggestions? Any help you can give me will be appreciated.
Thanks
