Cracks in nails

For as long as I can remember, I have had lines in my toe nails. These lines, or cracks run from the front edge of the nail back to the base of the nail. It seems that the nail is laminated and these lines or cracks are mostly in the top layer or lamination.

Recently I have had one of these cracks appear in one of my finger nails. The crack is in the top layer, but by the outer end of the nail it goes all the way through the nail.

In doing day to day work, this crack is continually snagging on things and eventually I have to cut the nail back to the "quick" to get it to stop snagging.

Any ideas?

Re: Cracks in nails

Try using a good quality nail and cuticle oil such as Solar Oil or Botanical Oil. Solar oil will rehydrate, condition and moisturize the nail plate - so will Botanical Oil. Solar Oil is available in fine nail salons and through Ulta cosmetic outlets. Botanical Oil is available in the nail department of Sally Beauty Supply nationwide.

If the split is starting at the cuticle and progressing all the way to the free edge, I am thinking you may have damaged the uppermost layer of the matrix where the nail plate cells are born. If there is damage in this portion of the nail unit, the nail will grow out with some sort of problem.

You can always opt to have a thin layer of silk wrap applied to the split nails to cover the damage. Doesn't matter if you are a guy or a girl - the wrap is virtually invisible.

Re: Cracks in nails

Thanks Marti. I'll give the Solar Oil a try.
