Brittle Toenails - Nail Problems Message Board

I have not had any fungus on my toenails or anything, but they are dry and brittle at the tips. In the past I used to constantly have my nails painted, and the top layer of my toenails easily get stained even when using a base coat. I can always buff off the stain. I don't mind that part so much, but my toenails break pretty easily at the top or the top layer at the tip will break and peel.

What are some things that can help my nails become stronger and prevent this? My fingernails are very strong and not brittle at all. Thanks!

Do you file the nails to make them shorter, or do you use clippers to cut them? Using clippers to cut your nails compresses the nail plate layers and can make them split and peel. Clippers can do this to your fingernails as well as your toenails. Try filing them instead and use a three-way buffer to remove any split layers. Use the black side to remove the split layers, the white side to refine the surface and the grey side to buff to a high shine. Doing this will help, but it would also help for you to apply a good quality nail and cuticle oil twice daily to rehydrate the nail plate. Try Botanical Oil from Sally Beauty Supply.

Thanks a bunch.. I actually do use clippers and I'll try using a file instead. I'll try some nail/cuticle oil as well. That sounds like it should definitely help.
