| Re: Anyone used fake toenails?
The "yucky green fungus" is not fungus at all, but it is a Pseudomonas bacterial infection. This type of infection occurs when one applies artificial nails to the nail plate without the proper preparation, or does not apply enough adhesive to create air-tight retentioj of the nail to the natural nail plate.
To prep the nail, you should remove the surface shine with a 240 grit buffer in the direction of the nail growth; this means from cuticle to free edge. Next, was the nails with warm soapy water and rinse really well, then dry with a lint free wipe. Next, apply nail prep which will temporarily dehydrate the nail plate surface. Apply a thin layer of a gel type nail adhesive to the entire nail plate and then apply the artificial nail to the suface and hold for 5 seconds. Trim the nail to length and you should be good to go.
If you do not properly prep the natural nails or improperly apply the "fake" nail, you can aquire a Pseudomonas Bacterial infection. The green discoloration is a by-product of the infection and is composed mainly of iron compounds. The stain will remain and will grow out with the nail plate.
Proper preparation and application will prevent infection.
