sanitization of clippers/nippers???? - Nail Problems Message Board

Hi,

I have a fungal infection on my big toe. Obviously, I am concerned about this spreading to my other nails and also reinfecting the nail in the off chance that home remedies would work (Lamisil did not work for me). My question is how do I ensure that my clippers/nippers are properly sanitized? I have just been buying new ones over & over again because I was unsure of how to properly do this. I have read a lot of conflicting information on this. Now I have quite a collection of clippers/nippers and would like to settle this once and for all.

What are my options to kill the fungus? How are they effective? Rubbing alcohol? Peroxide? Can I cook them in my oven? Other options? Specifically, what should I do?

I really hope I get a good response. I've been searching online for HOURS and have not come up with much.

Sanitation of manicure implements is a lot more simple than you are imagining. Take each one and wash them with soap and water and scrub them with a soft toothbrush to be sure any debris is removed. Rinse them really well under warm running water and dryoff the excess water. Totally immerse them in a quaternium compound of 10 parts water to 1 part clorox for a FULL ten (10) minutes. Wash them again, rinse them again, dry them off and use your blow dryer to be sure they are dry. Place them in a sealed container until the next use. Never use the same implement on an infected nail that you do on a healthy one. This is the only time you need a second pair. You can purchase sanitizable nail files at your local Sally Beauty Supply and sanitize them in the same manner. Easy Peazy! No need to bake them or keep purchasing new ones.
