I am not a doctor by any means, but my doctor once gave me a tip to treat my ingrown toenail infections as soon as I notice signs. Buy peroxide (sometimes $1 for two bottles at the dollar store!) and get a bowl; put 1/2 peroxide and 1/2 water so your toe can soak in it. Soak your toe 2 to 3 times a day if possible. In my experience, the infection is gone in a few days. It really just depends on the severity of the infection. Also, if it is ingrown and you get rid of the infection, it will most likely come back if the part of the nail that is growing into the skin is not removed. But don't treat an infection lightly; if it does not get better, you should seek medical attention.
