Melanoma in the matrix does not create a horizontal line; instead it creates a vertical line and does not 'go away'. I am still figuring that you are too agressive when you push back the cuticles. True cuticle is actually the transparent skin that adheres to the nail plate and grows forward from the proximal nail fold. The proximal nail fold is where the skin of the e p o n y c h i u m (which most people think is the cuticle) curls under and touches the nail plate. You should never push back the e p o n y c h i u m. YOu only need to soften the skin so the translucent skin on the nail plate also softens, then gently scrape it from the nail plate. If you apply too much downward pressure when you do this, or apply too much pressure right at the proximal nail fold, you can bruise the nail bed in that area and it will 'bleed' into the nail plate layers and end up looking like the line you are describing.
