Black lines under solar nails - Nail Problems Message Board

I am a 50 yr old healthy and in shape woman. I am fair skinned and blonde. I have been wearing solar/acrlylic nails for 20+ yrs. For the last 3 months I have developed several black vertical lines in the middle of the nail. My nail lady, who is vietnamese, says it is a bruise... I'm not comfortable with that as a reply because of course they are not trained in diseases of the nail and also have the interest of their salon at heart. Can you tell me what could possibly be causing this?

Do the black lines look like tiny splinters under the nail? Do they look like black 'spots' that might be irregular in shape? Is the nail sensitive where the spot is?

How long have you had those lines? Also is it on your hands or feet?

If they are tiny lines that look like splinters and are growing forward with the nail plate, they are just 'splinter hemoraghes' and are nothing to worry about. Splinter hemoraghes are caused by voids between the nail plate cells which fill up with blood from the underlying tissues. These can occur quite often, or you can get just a few and never have any more. No one knows why this happens, although they certainly are not a health issue.

It depends; you can have skin cancer of the nail and it exhibits a black line, that does not go away.

I just saw a documentary on this condition...

Its mostly predominate on the toe nails....
