Nail growth stopped after injury (subungual hematoma) - Nail Problems Message Board

A little over 3 months ago, I injured my toe and developed a large and painful bruise beneath my nail. I subsequently went to the doctor and had a hole made in the nail and the blood drained. This stopped the throbbing; I still have some pain in the toe, but only when I've been on my feet for a long time or wearing high heels. I was told to expect the nail to fall off as the new nail grows in. However, since then it seems that the nail has not grown at all - there has been no detectable growth. Is this normal or is a symptom of something more serious?

A hematoma can cause trauma to the nail matrix where the nail plate cells are born. After it heals, which can be up to 6 months or more, the nail will begin to grow again.
