Re: how to treat a smashed thumbnail

It depends entirely on how bad you smashed it and how much blood has built up between the nail bed and the nail plate.

Re: how to treat a smashed thumbnail

I smashed it really good... a big 6x6 post landed on it. The bottom third of the nail is filled with blood and it's quite swollen. But due to icing it right away, the throbbing has now stopped.

Re: how to treat a smashed thumbnail

If this was recent, you will still need to soak it in cold water several times a day to keep any swelling down. Did the nail bleed, or is all the blood still contained? If it is still contained, you may want to drill a little hole in the nail plate to allow the blood to come out. You can do this with a tiny drill bit - hold it between your fingers and turn it around while exerting enough pressure to alow it to drill into the nail plate. Just be sure that you go slow because the nail plate isn't that thick. Keep it clean and dry by applying peroxide to the hole at least twice a day for several weeks.
