after losing my thumb nail how do i get it to grow back?

After losing my thumb nail how do i get it to grow back? It peels and i keep picking at the layers and have at times removed the entire nail with clippers and I now only have one layer and in some spots no layer. This has been going on for almost 3 years now with no change because i can't leave it alone. It is so thin. The bottom of the nail is soft and raised and the top part is so thin. Its so ugly. I had nail acrylics on and after removing them, the thumb nail was raised at the bottom and I tried filing it down only to remove the layers and leaving a spot of exposed skin. Ever since my thumb nail has been like this. Help!!!

Re: after losing my thumb nail how do i get it to grow back?

The overfiling and picking have damaged the nail bed and most likely the matrix as well. Whatever is left after 3 years of doing this is all you will ever have. Once the matrix is compromised by overfiling, picking or other forms of trauma, it cannot produce the normal amount of nail plate cells. What is left of the nail plate cells cannot adhere to the damaged nail bed. I am sorry to say that this is the way your nail may always be.
