A while back I stubbed my big toe and the corner of my toenail broke down further than my nail line. I finished the job and clipped it to the break. Since then the little bit of skin around it is dark and sort of painful. The dark doesn't go much under the nail. It looks like I have lint stuck in the corner where my toenail meets the skin.
Any treatments you suggest? My nail is healthy, otherwise. No black lines, thickening, or yellowing.
Thanks.
A black discoloration is the sign of a Pseudomonas bacterial infection. Keep it clean and dry and apply a drop of peroxide at least twice daily to help kill the bacteria. The stain, whichis composed mainly of iron compounds, will remain and will grow out with the nail plate.
Thanks, Marti! The nail itself isn't really stained, it's the skin around it. I will try peroxide. If that doesn't help, I will make an app't with a podiatrist. Thanks so much for the help.
