Hi. My 4th toe nail broke at the base for some reason. I can see the crack somewhere at the mid-bottom part of the nail. Its painful sometimes. Will this heal by itself? If so, how long will it take to heal? What can I do to help it heal faster and to make the nail stronger? I broke this nail before. But usually its just the top part. This is the first time the nail broke at the bottom. The middle part of the nail actually appears kinda white now and not translucent as it usually is. Please advise.

Also, is it possible for a broken nail to NOT grow back?

Unless you either ripped out the root of the nail or had it surgically removed, the nail will continue to grow. If it is painful, soak it in cold water for a few days until the pain subsides. Keep it clean and dry by applying a drop of peroxide to the area for a while. This will alos help to prevent or kill any bacteria in the area.
