Infection usually starts at the free edge and could be fungal, yeast (candida) or bacterial (pseudomonas). I would have her go to her podiatrist for a proper diagnosis. Could be just nail plate trauma from tight-fitting or pointy toed shoes, running, etc. Could also be the non-acetone polish remover dryingout the nails too much. Non-acetone removers remain on the nail plate longer then regular acetone and can soak into the nail plate. I use straight acetone to remove polish as it evaporates very quickly - even more so than acetone based polish removers.
