Even though you tested negative for fungus, it is still fungus. When they do a scraping and send it off to the lab, the solution they send it off in will actually kill the fungal spores so by the time it gets to the lab, they are all 'dead'.
The characteristics of fungal infection are: a thickening of the nail plate, a yellowish discoloration, nail plate separation from the nail bed and apparent debris in the area of separation.
The nail plate will have to grow out from the matrix forward and since toe nails grow much slower than fingernails, it can take from 6-12 months depending on your genetics for nail growth.
