Removal of Lunula. - Nail Problems Message Board

Yes okay, as being the curious person that I am (and somewhat stupid when concerned with my body), I realised that a bit of my Lunula on my left thumb was sticking out.

Course, I know now that it wasn't that clever of me, but i removed the nail around the lunula (well, all of the lunula), yet the top of the fingernail is still on and pretty much intact with my thumb. So my question is (even though I think I know the answer, reading these other threads), will the nail around the Lunula grow back, or will it just, you know, grow onto skin? There was a kinda white bit below my nail, and I removed that too (goes well with the 'clever me' part). So I'm not sure if it'll grow back, seeing as the top of my nail still exists.

The white bit of skin was the lunula which is the leading edge of the matrix where the nail plate cells are born. If you damaged this portion of the nail unit, it will not be able to properly develop nail plate cells which means that it might not grow back properly.

But it might grow back?

I mean, I'm not fussed whether it only grows back to be normal skin or not, I know it was my fault. It would be nice to know if it grows back, and if it bothered me that much to be random, then I could go to a doctor or something of the like the get it fixed?

Theres always procedures I guess.

How would be the best way to stop infection? I would normally put it under cold water for a few minutes, then disinfect it, and bandage it. Or should I leave it in open air?

Writings become a pain, which doesn't work when you have an English course to do. Should've thought about that before, I guess.

Soak it in cold water several times a day for the pain. After soaking, dry really well (your blow dryer set on low works well for this) and apply a drop of peroxide to be sure no bacteria are present. Please do not use a bandaid as they allow for excess moisture to build up and bacteria and fungus just love the extra moisture.

It is already starting to heal. It looks as though it might be normal skin, however, but that was to be expected in my mind. I shall find out in due course what happens.
