I need some answers PLEASE - Nail Problems Message Board

My finger had been stepped on and I had an artificial nail on... I figured I bruised it and let it go thinking it would fall off. However it became such a nuisance I went to the ER to have it drained. It had become infected somehow from work. So I trimmed the nail back as far as i could because it was pulled up. Now a week or so later the nail finally came off from underneath my cuticle.... I do not see a new nail in my cuticle. and where my nail was is really ruff and dry. Do you think I have hope for a fingernail to pop out of my cuticle sometime next year?!?! I understand it may be deformed but it cant look no worse than it does now.... What should I do?

Please anyone who has had a nail come completely off from underneath the cuticle.... I would like to know what I may expect.

Anytime there is trauma to the matrix where the nail plate cells are born, it will temporarily stop producing cells until it heals. When it does begin to produce cells again, the new nail plate will probably be damaged, however; as it grows, the damage may lessen. Cell production can stop for an undetermined amount of time - it totally depends on the amount of trauma.

So you think it will grow back and actually stick to the nail bed?

It depends entirely on how much trauma was inflicted on the Matrix. My husband slammed his finger just above the cuticle about 2 weeks ago - no new cells are showing up where the nail plate is broken and the Matrix is not yet producing cells in that area. The matrix is producing cells at the sides because the unjured portion is still producing cells, but in the center, he has a split and a 'hole' where it is not yet producing cells. It remains to be seen what will happen with his as well.

OH YA! I see some white coming from under my cuticle and it is sticking to the bumpy thing but i wonder if it will stick to the nail bed!>!>!>?!?!??!
