Are Vitamin Deficiency & brittle fingernails related?

I have heard that the appearance of one's fingernails can reveal a lot about their general health. I am discovering that the tips of my fingernails (where they connect to the finger tip) are turning a hazy white color and have become very brittle (peeling).

Does anyone know if brittle finger/toe nails are caused by a vitamin deficiency? If so, which one(s)? Thanks!
