It could just be vertical ridging caused by a dried out nail plate. This will also cause the nail plate layers to break apart somewhat and dirt can get trapped in these disrupted layers. Go get a manicure and ask them to lightly buff your nails to remove the ridging. Then use a good quality nail and cuticle oil on them at least twice a day. Ask for Solar Oil - if they don't have it, they can order it for ou.
