splitting toe nail - Nail Problems Message Board

I have a toe nail that is splitting on my left foot. It is the toe next to the big toe. It has done this for years! It does not get worse nor does it get better either. It is the only toe that I have this problem. What can I do (if anything) to cure it?

I can sympathize with you on this one. The nail on my big toe split right down the middle last year. I was hoping it would just grow out, but it didn't. It got very nasty and was a huge problem. I finally saw a foot doctor. He cut the nail down very short and recommended this: Using a cotton ball, scrub the nail with white vinegar. Then apply a coat of vapo rub on the nail. Do this daily for 4 months. I've been doing it now for about 6 weeks and it is better. The nail is still cracked, but where it's growing is healing. And it does look better.

Usually, if a problem has been recurrant for years, it will never change back to normal. If the split in the nail began at the matrix where the nail plate cells are developed, then the split is actually in the matrix and not just from a raised rail on the nail bed.
