Fingernail lost at base

Hello,

I recently caught my fingernail in a drawer, and didn't think much of it at the time, but now the nail has come off at the base - so the bottom third or so is missing. My concern is what will happen when the new nail grows back from the base. Will it "graft" on to the existing nail at the top of my fingernail, or will the two nails be a problem? Is it worth me seeing a doctor about getting the remaining nail removed?

Thanks very much!
