My fingernais used to be fairly straight, but over the past couple years or so, they have started curling down just as they reach the ends of my fingers.
I usually don't keep them long.

See a specialist for that. A dematologist first.
They will tell you what is wrong. GP does not know much about it at all.
Some doctors do cut your curling finger nails if it is a medical condition. You may have trouble to cut it without pain.
Some people have curling toe nail due to old age or injury, the foot doctor is able to cut it for the patient because it is painful to cut the nails with curls.
