Persistent nail infection

Hi, I've been treating what I think is a nail infection for nearly a year with over-the-counter products. My two big toenails and little pinkie nail are all crumbly at the edge when clipping them. I have religiously treated them on a weekly basis for the above time period. The opaqueness that had been contained at the tip (about 1mm) for the last 5 months seems to be spreading up one nail. Anybody got any advice please?

Re: Persistent nail infection

Hello scotsan,

I suggest going to your doctor for a prescription treatment. I also have had limited success with using over-the-counter products to treat nail infections. With my past fungal nail infections I've taken Lamsil which is successful with curing the infection. However, Lamsil doesn't seem to prevent the infection from returning months or years later. Lamsil can be hard on the liver though, so your doctor may need to do bloodwork before giving you a prescription for it.

Something else that may help is applying foot powder to your feet in the morning to help keep you feet dry. Wearing cotton socks throughout the day can also help keep your feet dry.
