Hi,
I just recently noticed that my big toenails started to turn a purple color, like they are bleeding underneath along with a yellow tint as well. I saw my Dr., and had blood tests ran and everything came back negative besides having a positive UTI. Today my nail is easily breaking off with toe nail clippers and does not hurt. I'm very confused any leads out there?
Thank you for responding to my post. It's very weird that this happening. I have never had a fungal infection in my toes what-so-ever. I never dropped anything on them, otherwise my toe nails would of been sore, right? The only thing that I did differently was wear black to nail poiish on my toes. So, I'm not sure how long the purple color was there due to the black toe nail polish. Have you ever heard of black nail polish causing something as this? My right big toe is half white and half purple with yellow tinting. That one the nail is breaking off now. The left big toe has a dark purple spot and a purple haze along the be of my nail with a yellow tint as well. This is freaking me out as I have other ailments that are happening to me like a flushed face, swelling of the hands and feet and feeling like I'm burning up from the inside out. I have been tested for so many things and have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, Sinusitits, Arthritis and have a 9mm bulged disk at my L5-S1. All I know this is very odd and very scary.... Any other thoughts?

I'm not sure about black nail polish, but I think nail polish remover can make your nails brittle due to its strong chemical contents.

When you say your left big toe has a purple spot, it makes me wonder whether your toe has poor circulation. Is the doctor you saw earlier a general practitioner or a specialist? If he/she is a general practitioner and can't give you any answers or treatment for your toenails, you may need to see if a dermatologist or a podiatrist can help you out.

It may be the black polish. However, with all the other symptoms you need to have your
Pulses checked in your feet to rule out peripheral vascular disease. Claudication is when you get pain in calves with walking. A doppler done on legs checks the vessels for varicose veins or deep vein thrombosis ( clots). These can be ordered by gp or seeing a vascular specialist. Hope only toenail polish. Dermatologist can check for fungus& can check " pedal" pulses( feet). Wouldnt be hard to tell what is cause of swelling. Try eating less than 2 gram sodium diet(salt in food, read label & table salt) also, your back? Hope you get better! Let me know if you need listening ear? Thanks! Gmak Sorry i didnt see your post before i wrote mine! Forgive me.

My Doctor I'm seeing specializes in Infectious Diseases, but she is very stumped. That is what I have been hearing a lot that maybe could be poor circulation or something to that degree. But that is the fist thing she did was squeezed my toes to see how my capillary refill was. Yeah, I think I'm headed for a podiatrist is next, but by the time that happens my nail will probably be completely gone. :-(

Yeah I don't understand why the Doctor didn't want to refer my anywhere else. The only thing she did was ran blood tests and squeezed my toes and checked my pulses in my feet and said my capillary refill was fine. My Doctors are very stumped and say I need Dr. House. Someone I know which is a RN mentioned something similar as to your doppler test. Said it could be a circulation issue along with clots or even possibility of my heart creating the symptoms. Just very concerened as my nail is already breaking off and I have also noticed a purple tint that resembles a rainbow over the white part of my thumb nails. So, I know this is something serious. Listening ear is great. All my symptoms are there physically but my blood is showing nothing?

Once, i had weird symptoms with blood clots and vsricose veins & i eas sent to a hematologist. He found that a anticoagulant was causing symptoms. Very smart dr! I hope you get better and they will find problem soon Not many people realize dermatologists are for skin, hair & nails. Good luck! Dont give up!

I'm seeing a dermatologist but she seems not to listen to crap. I went in to be seen about the flushing of my face and she says that is roseaca, or however you spell it. I told her it cant be that as when I bend over or do any kind of exertion my face turns bright red and is on fire. Then it takes it like an hour and a half to even turn back to its normal color again. This redness has caused white spots on my face, along with brown pigmentation, and red spider veins. She could careless about all that and was more interested in my mole on my back. LOL!!
I can call her office on Monday and see if I can get in. Where is this very smart Dr., that you talk about?
Dr. Natelson ,houston tx. Hematology & oncology! Yes, the oncology sign freaked me ouy a little. Especially because a new internist sent me & i didnt know why! Did the dermatologist say anything about the purple or fungus? Any infections in your body that you have been aware of in last 3 months? Rash or blotches that the dr didnt see? New medicines even antibiotics? Podiatrist, maybe. But i keep wondering what about your thumb nails, the swelling, the flushing? Instead of gp, infectious disease, dermatologist maybe a really good internal medicine doc or a hematologist in your area. Just in case something systemic is going on like what happened with me. If you dont mind how are you doing now? I hope fine. :-)
Hi curious! I'm 'curious' to know how are you feeling? Any new symptoms? Dr appts? Signs of getting better? Hope you are better!
Hi,
Yeah I ended up in the ER yesterday due to feeling and hearing 3 popping noises in my back when I was bending over in the shower. I am having a much harder time bending, sitting and walking now. In severe pain. I see my primary tomorrow. I think my protusion in my back is now a extrusion. I wasn't in so much pain with the bulge, but now my pain level is about a 10. I don't understand what is happening. It's almost like my body is breaking down. I'm going to push for another MRI of my lumbar, and some kind of ultrasound of my legs. Will keep you upated and thank you for caring.

How are things going for you? Were you able to schedule an appointment to see your dermatologist?

P.S. I havent scheduled an appt with my dermatologist yet. I have to see my primary first to get a referral to be seen. Crappy health insurance.

Oh curious I'm so sorry! Did they address the nail bed coloring@ ER? Or do blood work?Say anything like you have an infection, or any abnormality? I have had 4 back surgeries& have suffered 30 yrs with incompatible with being alive pain. Make sure that the dr you see for your back is a neurosurgeon. Dont let anyone do a myelogram or discogram! I have adhesive arachnoiditis, a condition causing spinal cord & nerves to swell, pushing out spinal fluid, then the nerves are squeezed causing #10 pain that never stops & it gets worse as your life goes on. Caused100% by medicine, blood, contrast dye, even preservatives in saline get inside the dura during surgery or spinal taps. So, get to the bottom of the systemic problems that you have(swelling, flushing, nails, dizziness etc) before you have back surgery. So, that you are a healthy good surgical candidate. Then, go to neurosurgeon that does minimally invasive diskectomy. No fusions because my NS said i was too young for that. I was 26. This is just my advice from wisdom of living with pain from 26 to 56. Of course listen to the drs. I know you are soooo sick of drs & all this. But, get 2 or 3 opinions. Also, on this site under the back problem board you wont believe how many knowledgable helpful people are there! Many make my experience seem like a picnic! But, they are positive, not negative. If i sound so its because i care about what happens to you & i get upset when someone gets back issues. The GOOD news is that there have been SO many advancements in spinal treatments in the last 30 years! So, i truly hope & do pray that ALL these things can be resolved for you. I am hear if you ever need an ear! Wish you all the best! Gmak

Hey curious, have you found out anything yet from dr? Any more tests? Praying for you& hoping you have not answered is because you are so much better & out living your life instead of because you still feel bad. Let me know soon i hope! Thank you, gmak
Well the ER was a huge waiste of time cause they said I can either be seen for my back or my toes. Well I chose my back cause of the severity of the pain. That was still a waist of time though cause the ER said they cant do anything for back problems. Gave me a prescription for Vicodin which does not tough the pain at all and makes me extremely loopy. LOL! I saw my primary and they are sending me out for another MRI here shortly and a referral just came in to see a Orthopedic Surgeon. As for the colored toe nails, on my right foot, half of my big toe nail is completely off now. My thumb nails have a light purple tint to them and light purple halo over the lunlae part. I see my primary again on the 14th and pushing to be sent to Loma Linda and to be tested for something I have found on the internet called Wilson's disease. I just don't get it. I'm becoming depressed with all these symptoms and hearing, "I need Dr. House." Just simply worn out. I appreciate your caring words 100% completely, it puts a smile on my face. Sorry to hear about your back issues as well. Its the worst! The pain is so constant and hurts so much. I have heard that I might possibly have some sort of connective tissue disorder but which is it is the question???
