Hi all!
Last December of 03, I had been seeing a Neurologist for the last 2 1/2 years due to Migrains. In November I started with muscle weaknes, spasms, and spasticity. In the Spring of this year, he decided that he does not accept my insurance? He sent me to this HORRID Ortho guy, who said there is nothing wrong with me, learn to live with it. Well, that is fine and dandy, BUT, I can stinking walk!!!!!! I don't know what he expects????? Now I am on a walker due to spasms and spasticity. Been trying different meds to see what works best.
My question: why do you think my Neurologist dumped me?? We had a really good working relationship. He is the only good one around here. What do you think??
Thanks,
Laurie
Hi Laurie,
What a shame, seems anymore the big picture is MONEY.I would'nt even try to get back with your neuor.I would go to your GP and see if he or she can refer you to another neuor, maybe you may have a longer drive but it sounds like you need to get looked at soon.Wish you well,Dessell
Thanks Dessell!
Yeah, the bummer is I will have to drive 45 minutes to 1 hour.
I was thinking and I wonder if I stumped him in trying to treat me??? I wonder if he did not know what to diagnos me with, and if he doubted to himself if he could treat me? The reason is that I could pay him cash, then I could have gotten reimbursement from my insurance myself, and he never would have had to deal with the insurance company. That is why I wonder if he didn't think he was capable of treating me??
Thanks again!
Laurie
Hi,
If he was'nt capable of treating you, then he should of referred you to someone who could, thats just good medical ethic I would think.I hope its worth your drive and you get some good treatment whatever it may be.
Dessell
You need to get to a good teaching hospital. (any hospital with the word "university" in it's name is a teaching hospital.) Hospitals will accept almost any insurance. Theyre not as picky as doctor's offices. And, it doesn't really sound to me like your neurologist diagnosed what is wrong with you.
Even if you have to drive a longer distance, it is worth it for good medical care.
Someone needs to order an MRI of your brain to see exactly what is going on. If it turns out that you do have MS, then you should be referred to an MS specialist at an MS center. Don't settle for less.
Where I live, I get great medical care. It has always been top notch, even for my small community. My local hospital is very, very good. I have a wonderful primary care doctor and GI doctor, and a fabulous ophthalmologist. So I just assumed that the neurologists would be the same. But the neurologists here leave A LOT to be desired. So I left the quack that I started with and traveled the 30-45 minutes to Manhattan. I've never looked back.
Don't concern yourself with the travel time. Get yourself the best care possible.

I agree with purple. A good neuro is worth the long drive. I drive my daughter 81/2 hours to another state for her appointments. It is difficult both financially and with regards to pain, but it is so worth it.
Purple and Julie,
I am trying to get into the University of Michigan Hospital, Physicians. A lot of people in Michigan drive there, about 3 hours away from me, but worth it. It is the 'top notch' of all hospitals in Michigan. I have got to find out what I can do for the muscle spasms and spasticity. I have not been dx with MS, but want to find out if I have it. If not, I need to get some type of treatment to help with these awful symptoms.

Don't feel to bad about neuro. I'm starting on my third. The first one had me on topmax and trasdone for the tremors and toradonal and phenagren for the headaches, nothing for balance, nothing for the mussel spastics. He didn't order any testing at all. The second one had a conflit with my gp. Everytime something was wrong, "it was go to your gp." The fact of the matter I don't think she was up to handeling an ms paticent. I've never seen such an unprofessional person in my life as she was, and had the pleasure of telling her so. She put me on balcofen for the mussel spastic and after I stopped seeing her and the script ran out, the mussel spastics actual eased up quite a bit. The third I'm going to see on Jan 6, he's suppose to be the ms specialist here in town. I'll find out. I looked long and hard at all of the doctors that I've see, they look like their on speeding carosel to me, They just keep falling off one at a time. I wish you luck in finding a new doctor. Call national ms society and see if they know of someone in your area. Try and not let things get so frustrating to you. I know it's hard. Good-luck and happy hunting.
Hi Laurie,
I don't have MS, but I have another nervous system disorder that originally caused spasticity and tremors in my hand. I took Baclofen and it helped with those symptoms. Fortunately, the spasticity stopped as we got my condition under control, so I stopped taking the Baclofen.
I also drive 4 hours to Maryland to see an eye specialsit who specializes in dry eyes. My local opthalmologist is the most wonderful doctor I have ever seen, but HE sends me to his friend in Maryland because he needs his help!
Jewel, I commend you for going to the end of the earth to help your daughter. 8 1/2 hours is nothing when it comes to your health.
