Hep please: PM doc now wants me to see a neurologist!

Aggh! I had 1 epidoral injection and it made me worse I have L4/L5 annular bulge w/ compression on both L5 nerve roots in subarticular recesses and L5/S1 Annualar bulge w/ no compression.....She is now giving me a script to see a neurologist....I am in much pain and have no closure on what to do! I thought PM docs help you all she has done was inject me causing more pain and give me oral steriods plus flexeral muscle relaxers. None of those work to take pain away my wife is 28 weeks pregnant who is limted to chores around the house while I am suffering in horrible pain at times....I just don't know waht to do this is a nightmare. I pay good money for medical insurance and this is what I get in return.....I just don't know what to do......I am turniong into a basket case here...AGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Hep please: PM doc now wants me to see a neurologist!

Spoiler-
I am so sorry about all of this. I know you are stressed to the max and feeling very let down, confused and upset right now. You have every right to be.

Did your PM doctor release you from the practice when he gave you the referral to the Neurologist, or is he keeping you as a patient and seeking help/information/advice from a Neuro to help him be able to manage your pain with the appropriate treatments?

I do hope that your pm doctor is just seeking a "second opinion" so to speak so he can better understand your situation and help you.

I don't know what to say. I am just so sorry you've been made to feel this way. Please do keep us posted.

Re: Hep please: PM doc now wants me to see a neurologist!

The way I see it is I am cut off for no reason and send me to another doctor....it's quite a let down and fustrating! Before the injection I only had mild annular bulge on the L4/L5 and L5/S1. After the injection I had leg problems in the left leg especially showing weakness and numbness so she sent me for another MRI, the MRI then showed annular bulge in L4/L5 compressing on both L5 nerve roots plus Annular bulge in L5/S1 w/ no compression. It's like after the injection something happened worse to me and she is cutting me off. I had the MRI last Friday and it took her until this afternoon to call me back after numerous phone calls and messages on this MRI report.

I had this report given back to ME Monday evening! It's very odd it took all this time! I don't understand I never did anything to her for this treatment I am getting. I never asked her for pain killers or made her feel unfortable in anyway. I am losing hope here in any doctor or treatment because I am not getting treated right as a patient in any way.

I am sorry I am just so let down in many ways the last 2 months, I am hurting and only my family seems to care not any doctors! AGH!!!!!

Re: Hep please: PM doc now wants me to see a neurologist!

Spoiler---Can I ask why it's bothering you to see a neurologist? The same thing happened to me with my injection. I am in much worst shape now than I ever was before the procedure. Mine was performed in my neck rather than the lower back and now my shoulder and both wrists are so painful I can't perform simple everyday tasks anymore--things I could do easily before the injection.

I have an appt with my pm tomorrow and I am praying that he WILL send me to a neurologist. In my opinion trying all these meds on me and now this injection has just made me worse and I am more than ready for a second opinion and another MRI.

It sounds to me like we are both in the same boat and could sure use a doc that actually care about what happens---maybe that's what you could get with a new doc?? Try not to stress, I know it's hard!! It could work out in your favor, you never know. Good luck to you!!

Re: Hep please: PM doc now wants me to see a neurologist!

Spoiler,

I can relate.I had went to a PM and they started me out on flexeril and done 1 injection. They hit the s1 nerve.I never went back.I have had 2 previous lumbar surgeries. My neuro surgeon is awesome,he monitors my back, but a third surgery is a high risk for paralysis. My neurologist is fantastic,he takes care of my MS and the nerve pain and monitors all my meds. For the time being it has worked out great.

Re: Hep please: PM doc now wants me to see a neurologist!

It's not bothering me to see a neurologist, Whats bothering me is to why it took my PM doctor so long to get back to me and why she won't give me proper medication to take care of my pain. It is a "pain management doctor" right? she has me on flexerall and medrol which it is my 2nd time on those steriods that only helps the first 2 days you are on it......she knows I am in pain and she knows I have left leg weakness but doesn't prescribe me anything for pain at all nor seems to care when I tell her I have a 28 month pregnant wife!!!! It's quite disturbing to tell you the truth.....My Family doctor is giving me 5/500 vicoden to help me but she should be doing that especially since they don't help all that much w/ my pain. It's like she wants to get me off her back after my injection that made me worse!!! it's not nice or moral at all!!!!

Re: Hep please: PM doc now wants me to see a neurologist!

sorry to hear about your situation.first of all, find a new PM who actually gives a rats a** about thier patients, the one you were seeing doesn't really appear to know anything about 'real" pain management or appear to actually care much about her patients and their needs.

seeing a neurologist well,I realistically cannot actually see how a neurologist is really going to benefit you in any way and will only frustrate you even more when you wait to see him/her and find that out for yourself.that was a really stupid referral for your PM to make.even seeing an actual neuro SURGEON would have been a much much better and more productive idea.really.But quite honestly I really feel the best doc for you at this point would be a good ortho surgeon.

neurosurgeons kind of specialize more in the upper back/c spine and on up into the brain, whereas an ortho would tend to deal more with the rest of the spine and on down thru your particular problem area.

and a neurologist for low back problems??oh yikes,is she for real??for her to actually send you to a neurologist for your particular problem, well i can see how frustrating it must be to deal with a doc who appears to not even really know who to refer patients to for proper evaluation.it was a stupid idea.

i personally would not see a neurologist for anything more than headaches.i have seen many neurologists and neurosurgeons over the years starting wayy back when I was sixteen and my migranes were out of control.my neurologist then was my best friend.saw him alot,he was great but honestly i wouldn't have seenhim for anything more than my headaches.and the ones that I ahve had to see since then(my wonderul neuro ended up getting parkingsons and had to retire) for my c spine and cavernoma issues well, they just could not compare with the overall knowledge of the actual neurosurgeons i saw after that.i really just cannot find the benefit for you in seeing any neurologist for even an eval of your low back issues,at all.

find a good PM who knows actual pain management and you can discuss any actual referrals with this new doc.just go back to your primary for a new referral to a new PM and then go from there.getting this "second opinion' from a new and (just has to be)improved PM would really be the best way to go in my opinion.i wish you lots of luck with all this and hope your current stress and pain levels will subside when you can just get to see a "real" pm doc.and congrats on the baby.take care,Marcia

Re: Hep please: PM doc now wants me to see a neurologist!

Hi Spoiler, Does your pm know that your primary gave you vicodin? My primary for the longest time was the only one to give me any pain meds while my pm just gave me meds like my topamax and a/d's for my nerve pain. The pm said he would rather just keep it that way when I questioned him about that. Maybe you need to speak to your primary about some stronger pain killers? Find out who's really in charge of your meds. You may have a situation like mine. Really strange compared to the rest of everyone else.

How soon before you see the neurologist? I see my pm today and I am hoping for some kind of relief from this pain. I wish I could go back in time and take back this injection

Re: Hep please: PM doc now wants me to see a neurologist!

It can be so frustrating to be in so much pain and seem like there is no way out...I too had horrible success with the injections with my PM ( mine were NOT done under anesthia)....and pain pills to help with the pain yea right!!!!...I get the best drugs from my family dr or Ortho...it just seemed like the PM was pushing steriods...and who needs more weight....now its funny you now are going to a nuerologist...it seems backwards to me...I was first to ortho surgeon(back specialist) then neurologist surgeon and then PM...now back to ortho...since you have bulging disc I don't know why they aren't sending you to an ortho surgeon..unless they feel since you have compression on the nerve the neuro is better suited....as far as your dr not calling you about your MRI results it is a crime...they seem to put off all their calls till they seem to have time while we sit here in agony...I always thank God that the drs I now depend on are very sensitive to my condition...I change drs to get ones that treat me like a human inside of just a name on a record...

Re: Hep please: PM doc now wants me to see a neurologist!

There are many good neuros who can fix lumbar problems. Just make sure the one you are refered to is a spine specialist and works mostly with lower backs.I'm seeing one this Thursday. I feel for you. God bless.

Re: Hep please: PM doc now wants me to see a neurologist!

Thank you all for your responses as Country kid mention about compressed nerve roots and reason for a neurologist.....I do indeed have compression on both nerves on the L5 which is causing left legt weakness and numbness, but over the weekend I have notice right leg numbness and slight weakness just starting.

The good thing is I do have a neurologist already for my narcolepsy who is a very good doctor and treats me as a human being I have ben w/ him for almost 3 years now. He was on vacation last week and should call me tomorrow to appoint me to a good spine/neurosurgeon. I hope you all take care and God Bless!

Mark

Re: Hep please: PM doc now wants me to see a neurologist!

While i can understand the being pushed around and more tests groan time by another doctor, sometimes another approach is a good thing not a bad thing.
2nd as far as my pain meds go i see a nurologist that specializes in pain manamgnet. For me it has worked out very well.
The pain managment specialist may wanted to centralize the worst part of the offender and the nurologist could assit in that avenue.
