Neurologist, Orthopedist or Rheumatologist?

Hi friends,

Wondering what you think? Would I benefit from getting an opinion from a Neurologist or Rheumotologist?

Dx: DDD L4-L5, L5-S1, enplate sclerosis, boney spurs, facet arthropathy, annular fissure L4-L5.

I have had chronic pain in my low back for 9 years. The last three years it got worse and continues to do so. Sometimes I get hunched over in pain and unable to straighten my back. I have had one bout with sciatic down the left side about 5 yrs ago. Recently, I have had bilateral tingling in my calves only and this is intermittent(?). I have tried pain meds, muscle relaxants, tricyclic antidepressants, cortisone injections, PT, now working w/TENS unit. I just can't accept that I am a lifer with this thing and want help <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/frown.gif"> I have consulted an orthopedist who is willing to do epidurals, IDET, etc., but my primary (HMO) doc is reluctant to give me the referral; however, I do have the option of self-referring under my POS plan and just cough up the cash. What would you do?

GO TO A SPINE SPECIALIST!!!!! Don't mess around with neuro's or othopede's that just dabble in spine problems.

Oh yeah.....Good Luck.

Re: Neurologist, Orthopedist or Rheumatologist?

Thanks Hank. I will try to find such a doc. Did write the San Francisco Spine Institute, but they never wrote me back. It's sooo frustrating; sometimes I think my primary thinks I'm just a total head case. Find myself wishing a day of my pain on anyone who doesn't believe me.
