weakness / confusion after stomach "flu". When to see a neurologist..?
hello. first poster here. hoping someone can give me some advice..
im a 29 year old, fairly healthy male. about 3.5 weeks ago, i came down with what seemed like a very strange stomach flu. i can't quite explain it, but it was unlike any flu i've ever had before. fever, aches, diarrhea, & fatigue but something else just wasn't right. primary flu symptoms seemed to resolve after about 5 days. I had one great day, then almost immediately after i developed significant weakness, fatigue, and most alarmingly mental confusion and fog. other symptoms are persisting like diarrhea, muscle fasciculations all over body.
since then i have not been able to work, and the symptoms seem to stay the same OR worsen a little each day. I have been working in my GP but I'm feeling like he is moving too slowly on this. He doesn't seem to know what's going. I've had some basic blood work done and most of it has been unremarkable. I'm tired of going in for appointments and nothing is said or done, then just going home back to bed. I don't feel like he is understanding the magnitude of what's going on. I can't work and therefore make money. I wake up in the morning and go almost straight back to sleep on the couch for the rest of the day, and this just repeats. I was completely normal, hard working, and enjoying life right up until the day this suddenly happened. I really feel like it's time to escalate to a neurologist but he has yet to suggest this. Is my desire to see a specialist warranted?
One theory I have it that I have been slowly weaning off klonopin for about 3 weeks before i got sick. My doctor is reluctant to blame my symptoms on benzo withdrawal. I was on the klonopin for about a year to relieve unexplained muscle twitching. I am aware of the symptoms of benzo withdrawal and that they are similar to my problems, but there's a lot of things going on that don't seem to fit. My most alarming symptom is the cognitive dysfunction and weakness . Things don't make sense. It takes forever for me to process things that are usually instant for me. My memory, both short and long term seem greatly diminished. Can't recall things easily. I feel like im floating outside my body sometimes (sounds stupid, but it's difficult to describe). And a really weird one is my dreams seem to be all scrambled, almost like their "broken". Nothing makes sense in them and it feels similar to the reality im in now. I admit, it greatly has me down in the dumps.
Anyone have any advice? Thanks for taking the time to read this.
Tests ive had are:
HIV Antibody and RNA - neg
TSH - normal
Vit D - low end of normal
CK - normal
ALT - above normal (possibly from having a fatty liver)
Bilirubin - Normal
Lipase - Normal
CBC w/ Diff - All normal except 2% atypical lymphocytes. Got this test shortly after the "flu" part of this thing so maybe that's why.
Re: weakness / confusion after stomach "flu". When to see a neurologist..?
Let's start with the simplest possibility: dehydration or electrolye depletion. Try drinking extra water and getting some electrolytes, and taking a calcium/mineral supplement.
If that doesn't help, then clearly this needs to be investigated. Your doctor may want to run more tests, so if a neurologist does become necessary, you can go with plenty of test results already in hand.
