I need help. I am 26 years old and at this point I am almost unable to care for myself.
In July 2011, I began experiencing some strange symptoms. It started with confusion, increased anxiety, and a complete change in my speech pattern. My speech slowed and I stuttered to the point no one could understand me. I went to the ER where they gave me a CT, which showed nothing, so they sent me home. My speech improved and eventually went back to normal.
Then in late August I had a sudden onset of weakness in my feet and legs. I was barely able to walk. I was admitted into the hospital where they did more testing- an MRI of my brain and spinal cord, an EEG, and an EMG/Nerve Conduction Study. All came back normal. My weakness improved some while I was there, so they sent me home. Since then I have accumulated additional symptoms- along with muscle weakness I also have severe muscle spasms, muscle stiffness, balance/coordination issues, headaches, memory loss, numbness in my feet and legs, severe fatigue, vision loss in right eye (it happened once- abt 6 hour duration), eye pain, and pain everywhere essentially. I have had depression and panic disorder for about 12 years and Fibromyalgia for 11 years. My anxiety and depression, which were previously under control, have worsened tremendously since July. I also have had a sleep study done and neuropsychological testing, which both showed nothing.
The neurologist I was seeing informed me yesterday that there is nothing wrong with me neurologically and that it has to be psychological. I DON'T BUY IT. I had no traumatic experience to set this off and my life was not that stressful until this started. What is going on? I don't know if I should seek out new doctors or just give up. I have two young sons that I am currently unable to care for, I can't work, I can't do much of anything. What should I do??

I have chemical sensitivity and experience most, not all, of the symptoms you describe when I experience a toxic reaction to any type of fragranced product, not just perfumes but also air fresheners, scented candles, household cleaning products, laundry detergents, etc. You stated that you also have fibromyalgia and I do know that, with the research I have conducted, there is a link between fibromyalgia and chemical sensitivity. Do you use alot of fragranced products in your personal hygiene, or your home? Sometimes, not always, I also experience confusion and short term memory loss. You need to keep a diary day-to-day whenever you start to experience these symptoms noting what you were doing and what type of consumer products you were in contact with at the time. There are tons of websites that you can research regarding chemical sensitivity or chemical injury. I am not saying that you do have chemical sensitivity but it is worth further research on your part. You can find specialists if they are in your area through the American Academy of Environmental Medicine website.
Sounds like Lyme Disease. I had similar/many symptoms for 3 years before I was tested for Lyme Disease, even though I never recall a tick being on me since I was a child and didn't have a bullseye rash either. According to CDC the test was negative, but according to my LLMD (Lyme Literate Medical Doctor) and IGENEX, I was positive. I was put on long term antibiotics and am now almost normal again. It took a few months to notice any difference at all, but one by one the symptoms started disappearing. Regular doctors go by the way they were taught in medical school (old school) way of diagnosing and treating Lyme Disease. You need a LLMD. People drive hours to see them if necessary.
I have been on antibiotics for 1 year and 2 months now. I finally get to start coming off to see if any symptoms return. I take Augmentin, Amoxicillin, Tindamax (on Sat. and Sun. only). I take Valtrex too. I'm lucky that my only side effect was diarrhea on Mon. and Tues. from the Tindamax and that decreased over time. I take 50 billion probiotic, 1000 mg Omega 3 pharmaceutical grade fish oil, digestive enzymes, B-complex, 1000 mg. vitamin C, and I cut out sugar and processed foods so my body had a fighting chance. The "side effects" you refer to your son having, could be Herxheimer reaction. Some people don't Herx and some people do severely. Hope this helps.
