stroke patient feelings and sensations

My mother had an ischemic stroke on the right side of her brainstem three years ago. Since that time, she has gotten worse, not better, in her recovery. Has anyone experienced chronic numbness, tingling and "vise" type sensations? She says she feels this on her left side from neck to foot every day and every day it is worse than the day before. She feel's like an elephant is sitting on her chest and that something is pulling her over. She walks with a walker, slowly and carefully. Has tried many medications to relieve this feeling, but nothing works. Any feedback on this would be much appreciated.
God Bless all of your stroke patients and your caregivers!
