muscle twitches all over body

For the last 3 months or so I have been having muscle spasms all over my body, some individual spasms lasting for weeks. More recently the muscles near the sides of my nose, lower lip, and neck have been spasming. But really my twitches have been all over. From my knee to my bicep, to my foot, to my thumb. Everywhere. I've gone from doctor to doctor now and no one can diagnose me. I've been tentatively diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, but my doctor didn't seem to think the spasms could be related.

My other ongoing symptoms are back pain, headaches, eye pain, joint pain in my hand, knees, and elbows. As well as stiffness in the affected joints.

I'm just trying to find out what could possibly be causing these spasms. I've been taking magnesium and potassium supplements which only help a litte, but my spasms seem to be getting progressively worse. Does anyone have any idea what could be going on with my body???? Please help!

Re: muscle twitches all over body

I don't have an answer, just sharing my similar experience. Last december I started having pins/needles all over my body as well as muscle twitching all over. I was convinced that I had multiple sclerosis. I also had severe left wrist pain, and both of my hands would feel really cold and tingly at times. I was convinced I had carpel tunnel in my left wrist because of how badly it hurt. I went to see a nerve/muscle doctor and they did EEG and all kinds of tests on me. Also got MRI of head, neck, spine. after a while all of this went away. It still confuses me to this day and I still ask myself what caused all of this. So if you get tested by docs and they cant find anything wrong.....it could be anxiety or stress. Earlier this year I had acid reflux, constipation, stomach pain and got a colonoscopy and nothing was wrong. It was all due to stress I was experiencing at the time. These are very powerful and can cause your body to act up. Good luck.

Re: muscle twitches all over body

Hey thanks for the reply.

It's been a little while since I posted and I've had lots of tests since then. So I do have some new information.

The doctors actually found a bacteria in my blood called Haemiphilus parainfluenzae. It was an incidental finding to a very expensive lyme disease test. Aside from that I also had a Vectra DA test, which basically is a test rhumatological diseases like RA. That came back with a result of 39, which is moderately high, a positive result. So that test, coupled with other tests from the rhumotologist, led my doctor to believe I definitely have some type of autimmune disease. He won't say exactly what yet, but it makes sense. Autoimmune diseases can weaken your immune system which could be why I had this bacteria in my blood.

Right now I am feeling slightly better than I did, I'm on a lot of medication though. I've been taking Naprosyn for pain, augmentin to try to get rid of this bacteria, and lots of supplements, particularly vit D for my immune system and magnesium and potassium for my spasms. The magnesium and potassium have been very helpful with the spasms, but whenever I miss a dose I start getting lots of spasms again. Even with the vitamins, I still get spasms, just not as much.

So I've had doctors tell me its anxiety, but really, sometimes its not all in your head. and those doctors that say it is, well they should go F--- themselves, because they're terrible doctors.

Re: muscle twitches all over body

Glad to hear that you found the cause. Hopefully you clean out the bacteria.

Re: muscle twitches all over body

Hi there -- I was wondering how you were doing. Glad to see that your doctors are taking you seriously. Definitely NOT all in your head, but pain and mood often go hand-in-hand. Please find something that helps you de-stress; I have taken up the new habit of acupuncture, with Friday evening appointments. Definitely something to look forward to at the end of each week. Like you, I'm also taking gobs of vitamins, on top of the pharma drugs. Hope you see some improvement!

Re: muscle twitches all over body

I have muscle twitches and have had them for the last 8 months. I have been to the doctor, and they told me I have an iron deficiency. ?? She didn't do a blood test to determine this, but I had a complete CBC for hypoglycemia not long before. She said by the symptoms I have, I was iron deficient... I was also told that I would have to take Iron supplements for 3 months, and may not see any result for a month. Well, it's been about 3 weeks. Even though they have become less, I still have them. I also get nervous about it...I sometimes cannot concentrate, have blurry vision, weakness and fatigue. I take magnesium, vitamin E, vitamin D3, Fish oil, and all of the vitamin B's...with Vitamin C as well. I don't know exactly what caused all of this, except the fact that I was not eating healthy and was very stressed out. Maybe it just knocked my whole system out of whack? It worsens about 10 days before my menstrual cycle and pretty much goes away after my period until the next time? It is very, very frustrating. I also have hypoglycemia. Does anyone have any input on this for me? Thanks.

To put it bluntly, your doctor has no idea whats wrong with you and you should find another one. To me, your symptoms sound an awful lot like lyme disease. So if I were you I would find a lyme literate doctor. And its very important the doctor is a lyme literate doctor, because most other doctors just have no understanding of the disease. Anyway I can tell you almost without a shade of a doubt that your problem is not and never was iron deficiency. It could be any number of things and you may need to see a number of specialists, but if I were you, I'd start with a lyme doc and a neurologist. And let me make it as clear as I can, your GP will not be able to help you. GPs have a very shallow understand of medicine and for these real mysterious medical problems, they're almost useless.

griff82, I have been experiencing a lot of the same symptoms... actually out of everything i've searched online (and that's been a lot!) this seems to match what I've been feeling almost exactly. right now we are without health insurance so we have done some testing but not extensive, and everything has come back "normal" so it's very nerve wracking.

One test they did do was an MRI to see about MS. Is that something a neuro had you test for?

Re: muscle twitches all over body

Hey Griff,

How are you feeling these days? I hope you are no longer experiencing the spasms. I've had the same issues for several years and am ready to go to my doctor with the information you've placed in this thread.

Re: muscle twitches all over body

I've had twitches / fasciculations for 17 years. I was dx'd with Benign Fascilation Syndrome and fibromyalgia which explains most of your symptoms. Hope this helps! Blessings
