Angry Nerve Pain in back of left hand

I am so frustrated at this point! I'm 48 and since October of 12 have had severe pain, numbness and tingling in the back of my left hand that worsens when I bend my wrist down. My relief is if I bend my wrist back. No injury to it, it's not Carpal Tunnel and my X-Rays are fine. It just came on one night. It wakes me in my sleep and continues to worsen. If I bend it at the wrist and stretch it, the pain hits a 10. The pain NEVER goes away. Heat helps a little. I've done weeks of Hand Therapy, but it seems to aggravate it when we mess with it. I'm taking Norco 10/325 1-2 times a day and I hate it. Because of a previous surgery I am unable to take any anti-inflamatory drugs or Muscle relaxers. My Family Doctor sends me to a Hand Doc who sends me to a Spine Surgeon, who sends me back to the Hand Doc who says "Let's try Hand Therapy, and if that doesn't work, we'll do a Nerve Test". I do Therapy, it's worse, I call him, he sends me back to the Neurologist who sends me back to the Hand Doc who is NOW sending me to a Pain Management Doc. What happened to a Nerve test?? I can't get the Doc to talk to me and his Nurse blows me off. To say I'm frustrated is an understatement. I feel unless I call these people weekly and take matters into my own hands (no pun) NOTHING gets done! Any suggestions?

Re: Nerve Pain in back of left hand

Did the spine surgeon order a MRI? Or did he feel your symptoms were not in line with a cervical spine problem?

Perhaps you should try a different neurologist and specifically ask for an EMG/nerve conduction study.

Re: Nerve Pain in back of left hand

I had a Nerve Conductory Test done by a Neurologist yesterday and at last have a diagnosis. CRPS. (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome) Nerves are fine, it's tissue damage and explains a lot about other things in my life that have been happening that I would never had associated with the problems in my hand and arm. It has also started in my right foot. Looking it up online has been very scary, but I'm thankful that at least now I know.
Thank you for your help and concern.

Re: Nerve Pain in back of left hand

Hi. I currently have a similar problem with my left hand. I was seriously burnt 5 months ago and the back of my hand was the worst hit and i now have what i think is nerve damage that has suddenly come on. Shooting pain down the fingers and constant pain in the back of my hand thats worse from using my hand and bending my wrist. I have also had swelling up my entire arm. have you had swelling?
Ill have a look at CRPS because i guess it makes sence seing as i am still heeling internally.
Thankyou for posting this. Im guessing you understand how horrible this is to deal with. at least i had an injury to explain what would have caused it. I hope your feeling better now.
