Guillian-Barre anyone? - Neuromuscular Diseases Message Board

HI! I recently had an unusual illness and was diagnosed with very mild Guillian-Barre syndrome. I was wondering if anyone else has ever experienced or known someone who experienced a mild case of GB. I am basically completely healed and feeling better, but i was just curious. Thanks!

My Aunt had a severe case of it a couple years ago. She ended up completely paralyzed in the hospital for quite a while. She couldn't even speak. She was moved to a rehab center and gradually regained use of everything. Since she has been 100%, even had a child with no relapse (pregnancy can cause relapse in some people) and you can't even tell she's ever had it.

I am happy to hear that in both cases there was full recovery as my dad currently has guillian-barre.....he has been in the hospital since the end of October. With his his whole face is pretty much paralysed and from what i've heard it will probably take 6 months recovery.

I am a GBS survivor. I have had 2 attacks. The first left me paralysed from the neck down in ICU for 79 days on a vent. I then spent another 8 months doing therapy in and out of the hospital. The second attack was very mild and caught quickly. I walked into the hospital and walked back out 8 days later.

Wether you have a mild or severe case it takes time for your mylen sheath to regrow. Fatigue will always be and issue. Should you over do it you may feel like you are relapsing or having another attack.

For more indepth help you can contact GBSFI.com and talk to people who have "been there, done that". The people are very resourcefull.

eklektika: It can take months to sometimes years to fully recover from GBS. Most of the time you are left with major residuals. We have a saying, GBS=Getting Better Slowly and this is ever so true.

Hi, my mother is currently going through this ordeal. She was hospitalized June 4, 2006 and was in there for 5 months and 5 days. Numerous times, I thought I was going to lose her. My momma is currently living with my grandmother, and recieving physical therapy and other care. Doctors say she will make a full recovery, but it might be over a year.

I was actually wondering if anyone knew of any foundations for this disease that might be able to offer any financial help. Not only is my mother a single parent, but has two children; I'm in college and recently turned 18 and my sister is 14. Momma's a nurse, but her paychecks were cut in half when she was hospitalized, and now her disability will be runnig out in a week or so. This is certainly not enough for our family, as well as for the bills to keep our home.
