| Mysathenia or Lymes?
I am writing in reference to my mother, a 60 year old who is becoming increasingly ill with some form of nueromuscular disease. She has seen numerous Neurologist seeking answers, but to no avail. She originally presented 2 years ago with a tick bite that resulted in a bulls-eye erythema (redness) and a low grade fever that lasted 6 months. She took a 10-day course of Tetracycline. Approximately 10 months later, she began to notice increasing muscle fatigue in her arms, which progressed to her legs while stair climbing and bicycling. In January 2004, she began to notice blurred vision while reading. She presently complains of dysphagia(problems swallowing) (which worsened during a course of Cipro), intermittent low-grade fever, tingling in the palms of her hands and soles of her feet, and increased blurred vision. Her present Nuerologist has prescribed a 60-day Doxycycline Rx, which she has been taking for 2 weeks and seeing no signs of improvement. She has had tests for Lymes, CT scan of the brain and chest, and EMG's, all of which have returned normal results.
My main question is are there any more extensive tests available for MG and where should she go to obtain them? And, what is the prevelance of MG in patients without an enlarged thymus or thymoma?
