I usually notice more than 24 twitches a day. It's probably more, it’s hard to tell.
I have also been experiencing jerking of my arms and legs. This only occurs when I'm resting. I have notice an increase in the jerking of the limbs. I feel terrible because I feel as if I have no control over these jerks. I am thankful though that it only happens when I'm resting.
I have noticed an increase in the twitching and jerking. I'm wondering what is causing it and if it is something I should be worried about. I have already looked into the medications I'm taking and none of them have muscle twitching or jerking as a side effect. I'm without insurance right now and would like some advice from anyone who may know what this may be caused by. I feel as if this is abnormal. I have asked around to find out if this is normal. I do understand that some muscle twitching is normal (like in the eyes, etc). But what I'm experiencing is a lot and can’t possibly be normal.
I also have other symptoms that could be or not be related. I have also been experiencing dizziness and fatigue. I get dizzy from standing up from a sitting or laying down position. I also feel really tired and irritable by 2-3pm. I get plenty of sleep (more than 8 hours), so I know this isn't causing my fatigue. I have also been experiencing chest pain. This has been an issue for some time now. I thought it was due to stress and/or anxiety. I'm on medications to help with my anxiety so the chest pain can't possibly be anxiety related. I do believe I have arrhythmias. I have seen a cardiologist in the past concerning my chest pain. They concluded that it was anxiety related and to continue taking and/or increasing my meds (which I’ve done both). Like I said, I don't know if these other symptoms have anything to do with my muscle twitching or jerking.
I appreciate any advice or any information anyone could give me. I hope to figure out the cause and get this under control. Thank you!!!
Re: Muscle Twitching & Arm/Leg Jerking! What's Causing This To Happen???
I have the leg/arm jerking at nighttime also. Everyday I wake up unrefreshed, fuzzy in the head and severly fatigued. I had a sleep study done ad I was diagnosed with PLMD. I was put on Mirapex and it does help a little but not enough. My Neurologist said there isnothin more he can do for me and referred me to a shrink. I am already seeing one, and have been for 3 years. I am on Cymbalta and xanax daily. I just want to feel normal and happy again.

i have the same thing big time
it goes from the shoulder either left or right then in the legs
never in 2 areas at once
its skips from one area to the other
it is a violent quick jerk then its over for a second or more
it lasts some times for a few minutes to a few days
so this is my advice first when the jerking starts get up and walk around do not lay down it only gets worse
also try some thing that a ms doctor will say don't, take a SHORT hot bath or hot shower then get under the covers in the bed this also seems to help
also one other thing that helps if you have a wife or husband have then scratch your head back and shoulders it seems to also help
last but not least this should actually be first your spouse is needed for this its love time
this seems to stimulate the brain and side track the electrical impulses in the brain that are causing the jerking in the first place

Re: Muscle Twitching & Arm/Leg Jerking! What's Causing This To Happen???
Hi! You sound really upset and anxious now, and I can understand because I have had a lot of similar symptoms. Would you share what muscle or spinal testing you have had? Also, check the anti-anxiety meds because some of the side effects could be causing your symptoms. In addition, are you drinking adequate water, breathing properly, and getting proper sleep/exercise/diet? (I know, who can sleep while they are twitching! ) Have you had a full spinal/neuro evaluation as well as a metabolic/endocrine workup....so many little things could be the source, so a baseline assessment by a doctor who is willing to listen to you and follow up is the best place to start. If the doc seems impatient or dismisses your symptoms, but you still feel they are valid, please go find another doctor. I had to go through several in different fields to find one who was willing to manage my symptoms, but now I know that she is doing whatever it takes to make sure that I am getting the best care. Not being heard can make you feel really alone and even more stressed as well! You don't mention what type of work you do, or if you might have exposure to anything causing an allergic or neuro reaction...(repetitive motion, prolonged sitting at computer etc.) Hope this helps you find a way through....it can be frustrating....try to stay calm, because the "twitchies" can definitely get worse when you stiffen up your muscles under stress! Hope this helps!
Re: Muscle Twitching & Arm/Leg Jerking! What's Causing This To Happen???
I've twitched for several years. Random twitches all over my body. A few weeks ago I started jerking. A leg, and arm, my torso, neck. I've had back problems as long as I can remember and wonder if that might be the cause of all this nonsense.
I had an MRI a few years ago to rule out MS, that was normal. Seen the neurologist a month or so ago about the twitching and he diagnosed it as BFS, benign fasciculation syndrome. Now the jerking has started so I'm off to see my family Doc today.
It's driving me crazy because I don't know what it is and pray it's not something really serious. I can deal with twitching and jerking, but I have two young kids and need to be there for them. Any info is much appreciated.
Re: Muscle Twitching & Arm/Leg Jerking! What's Causing This To Happen???
Hi everyone. I'm new. This is my first post and the reason I am here. Found this thread in a search. I too have this. Started out as the lighter twitching but over the years as progressed to large jerking. I have an autoimmune disorder, which flarred after a viral infection last fall and the jerking got even more pronounced. I have other neoro symptoms too, just like alot of you.
The dizzyness/vertigo, I have woke up with paralysis on the right side of my face, the second and third time it also included my right arm.. after a month or so the paralysis went away. MRI was negative for MS, no stroke.
That was in 2000, CCAT in 2006 after ER visit was also negative. Havent had a test since. But it seems the jerking has once again got worse now its where people look at you they notice the big jerk! My vision also gets so but I have to use a magnifying glass along with my reading glasses when I have a flare.. My neuro symptoms are when I'm flarring with my autoimmune disorder and they are part of it.. always thought the jerking was just part of it. I also get problems with slurred speach and have balance issues.
I am seeing a new RA Doctor on 2-16 to go over the battery of blood and urine work she did on me. I will let you know if I find anything out.. in the mean time.. please keep posting how you are doing everyone and if you any new news.. take care..
Re: Muscle Twitching & Arm/Leg Jerking! What's Causing This To Happen???
Hi, I sent out a thread a few months ago and have been interested in seeing all your responses. I too have an autoimmune disorder that flares up and it is most often evident in my eyes; I get a condition called IRITIS which is related to some autoimmune types of arthritis in people with HLAB-27 gene (which I have). For the past 13 years I have been going to doctors, hoping to find a reason for my neuro symptoms which include twitching, odd sensations, vertigo, and most recently, jerking. I've been very athletic in my life so felt that my life was "over" when all this started. At first, I aggressively sought an answer, hoping that I could name and fight this problem. Over the 13 years, I have had 3 brain MRIs, 2 lumbar punctures, 2 spinal MRS, lots of blood work, EMGs and tests for types of seizures.
To be honest, the fear that occurs when I get a new symptom is just as bad as the symptom sometimes...
Last year, after taking a break from doctors for a while, the jerking started and I went to an acclaimed hospital in Baltimore. They ran every test and all came back negative. My doctor recommended that I go back to a rheumatologist, however, I'm a bit sceptical because the last time I tried to discuss my neuro symptoms with my ocular immunologist, he suggested I see a neurologist. I think that there are so many types of problems that make the body do haywire things.
To the person who wrote about facial paralysis, I'm wondering if you've been tested for lyme disease. From what I understand, that commonly happens in folks with lyme.
Anyhow, please let us know if you find anything out or you need support.
Re: Muscle Twitching & Arm/Leg Jerking! What's Causing This To Happen???
rapid internal tremor/ twitching/ buzzing/ electricity/ rumbling
Like most of you, I too have had internal tremor (which is at a very rapid pace), buzzing, rumbling feeling/ sometimes feels like electricy, like I am plugged into an electrical socket. I feel this every single second of the day, for years. I noticed that a couple of you mentioned you got this after an epidural. wow...for years, I thought that my epidural might have been the cause.
Then afterwards, the countless medications, and even the sleep deprivation in and of itself contributed strongly, I believe. I know there was some mess-up with the epidural, as the anesthesiologist and nurse indicated at the time. My severe sleep deprivation and sleep disorders started right then. Now, over 9 years later, I am still sufffering horribly.
I am feel horrific fatigue (from the non-stop twitching, along with severe sleep deprivation from virtually no deep-sleep. At a sleep lab, they confirmed my severe sleep disorder (period limb movement disorder). Also said it was restless legs syndrome. And, they did confirm that I had virtually non-stop movement in my legs. But, clearly it;s way more than that. I'm feel like I'm plugged into an electrical outlet 24/7. When the sensations are less, my sleep improves. I am on magnesium (which helped greatly initially), 2 supplements, carbamazepine, and iron. Also take a multi-vitamin and vitamin D (unrelated to this problem, though).
The sleep problems began after the epidural (and childbirth), but it wasn't until years later (actually after getting off a benzo (Klonopin) that the buzzing became far worse. Before then, it was more like electrical sensations. After getting off the benzo, it was full blown vibrations.
Like virtually all of you, I, too, get blown off and treated like an anxiety patient. I do come off as anxious, but it;s virtually impossible not to when you have a dizzying amount of vibrations going in all direction at an extremely rapid speed. I have pressured speech.
My cardiologist said I have abnormal electrical activity. Wasn't a surpirse to me, as I also shake with each heartbeat. Like a shake within my general shakes.
I don't believe any of this would have happened to me had I not had any medication/epidural of any sort. I also beleive I was predisposed to having such a neurological disorder. A family member shakes.
Someone here said something about being diagnosed with a mitocondrial disorder...can you tell us more about that?
I too have had all sorts of blood work. no answers. Nothing. For years. I need a support group for this. This site has been wonderful. Up until now, I felt totally alone with this. Totally.

Re: Muscle Twitching & Arm/Leg Jerking! What's Causing This To Happen???
This sounds very familiar. Around a year or two ago I was shaking, jerking, and twitching. I went to the doctor's to sort it out, and they checked me for thyroid problems, deficiencies, etc. I don't remember what their conclusion was, but they put me on Deralin, which is a beta blocker, and lowers your blood pressure and makes you less prone to headaches. After a month or two of constantly taking them morning and night, my shaking is gone. Also with this I was feeling extreme anxiety (and still am) but it stopped all my jerking. I also suggest something else - when people form varacose (sorry not sure on spelling) veins they experience twitching within the muscles/skin or itching. Just some quick advice.
Re: Muscle Twitching & Arm/Leg Jerking! What's Causing This To Happen???
I have similar symptoms - twitching, joint pain, urinary issues (frequency, urgency, weak stream...), chest pain, skipped beats, trouble breathing at times...and have seen every doctor possible from urologists, infectious disease (ID), nuerologist, cardio, pulmanary, ENT, rhuemotologist...CAT Scans, MRI's, xrays...etc. many of the doctors see the issues - but cannot make a diagnosis. See things like lymph nodes that are calcified in the pelvic area, my prostate looks like it is 60 years old...I am 40, heart monitors picking up extra beats, EKG showing irregularities....The ID basically laughed at me and said why are you wasting my time after I handed him a 3 page detailed history of my problems / tests / results. His solution was go out and live your life. Clueless...
Having symptoms that started 20 years ago and have gotten progressively worse to the point it is significantly affecting my quality of life and I feel like my heart could just stop at any time. I really believe I have some sort of virus - in fact I know I have some kind of virus....I have been on antibiotics - enough that one doctor said I used a nuculear bomb on my body and it would have taken care of any bacterial infection. I am just amazed that todays medicine doesn't have a way of detecting viruses...I have had so many blood tests and get the usual reply : Everything looks good...WHAT? They seems to be some developments in detecting mystery symptoms caused by viruses - like XMRV which is linked appears to be linked to CFS.
Anyone have any advice on how to get a virus diagnosis - outside the normal tests....TB, hepatitis, HIV, Lyme....?? I am anxious to hear any thoughts - ideas.
Re: Muscle Twitching & Arm/Leg Jerking! What's Causing This To Happen???
Hi I have been experiancing muscle twitching all over my body escpecially in my legs this has started 3 days after i was vaccinated with the H1N1 vaccine. since the 13th of January 2010 they never stoped and some times I have tingling in both of my feet. I saw 11 doctors most of them GP 2 Neurologists and 1 psikitres. could it be anxiety or ALS? i am very worried about it one of the Neuros said that i have noting and the other one told me its Begign Fasiculation syndrom. If it is ALS after 2 months i can steel be able to walk????
Re: Muscle Twitching & Arm/Leg Jerking! What's Causing This To Happen???
I have the same things happening to me. I would like to know what to do? i have had neck surgery with to disc replaced. The doctor told me that my spinal cord was badly bruised and it would that it would take 6 months to heal. I had 2 more MRI's done neck and back.
Re: Muscle Twitching & Arm/Leg Jerking! What's Causing This To Happen???
I have a similar problem(I think). I sometimes sit down and all of a sudden I get these little twitches in my legs. Its nothing painful but just annoying. It also freaks me out a little bit of why it happens. So if anyone could tell me whats wrong or just give a little support, I would appreciate it greatly.

Re: Muscle Twitching & Arm/Leg Jerking! What's Causing This To Happen???
I got one for you all... My tongue spams. That is the crazy feeling I have. I am so used to the legs jumping, I don't even think of them anymore. That have been happing for years and years and years. However just this last 6 months, now my arms, back and neck, and even my tongue are jecking away day and night. So funny to see my arm jerk and hit the computer keyboard.
So I;ve done some reading and Iron is the way to start for self help. But best to get to a head doctor ASAP....then again, I lost my job and now no insurance.
Oh Well...If my mother can live with it for 40 years,,heck I just got 10 to go.
Do stress out to much. Life is to short. Just think, back in the day...we did not have the internet or go to doctors.
