Re: Muscle Twitching & Arm/Leg Jerking! What's Causing This To Happen???

Angel,
Definitely see a neurologist. Things like MS, ALS, Parkinsons, etc. do not have a specific test that tells you whether or not you have them. You should really see someone who specializes in diagnosing neurological disorders and get started on figuring out what is going on. My mom is very young but has just been diagnosed with Parkinson's. She has had muscle twitching, tremors, and rigidity for some time and it has taken forever to get a diagnosis. The road can be long, get started early and good luck.
Take Care

Re: Muscle Twitching & Arm/Leg Jerking! What's Causing This To Happen???

Angel of light, have you ever figured out what you have going on with your muscle twitches and shooting pains? I would love to know. I have had the same problem since last august. Here it is April of 2008. I am finally seeing a neurologist on May 7th. I am scared of course. Scared of the unknown. No one is my family has MS, Parkinsons or anything like that. Neithor did they have hypothyroidism and I came down with that two years ago. I have had my blood tested for everything. Its all coming back normal. Thank God! But it still leaves me with no anwer, no diagnoses. I am so frustrated and the twitches are so annoying, expecially at night. No one around home can relate to this because no one has had it happen. I don't know where to turn. I try not to panic. I am 43 and feel like I am still young to fall completely apart. Just know you aren't alone. I am beginning to wonder if the guy talking about the antibiotics might be right. I have taken tons of those for sinus infections. I wonder if this is a delayed reaction of a poisen in my body?? I believe it can be true. The docs won't tell you that though, that is for sure.
Keep me posted please!

Question Re: Muscle Twitching & Arm/Leg Jerking! What's Causing This To Happen???

I'm curious about occasional leg jerking I have. It started several months after I was in an auto accident in 1996 and happens only after I go to bed, after I relax. I've had previous lumbar diskectomy. There is no pain involved with the jerking, and it doesn't happen all the time. When it first started after the accident, it would happen daily and continue repeatedly for probably 30 minutes or so. My neurosurgeon at the time didn't feel it was related to nerve irritation following the surgery and later the accident. EMG studies didn't show any nerve irritation either. But 12 years later, I still experience this strange phenominon. I'm just wondering if anyone has any ideas.

Look at your Medical records and check that you have not taken quinolones. Because if you have this is a class effect that usually shows up several weeks to months after the course of antibiotics have concluded

Re: Muscle Twitching & Arm/Leg Jerking! What's Causing This To Happen???

Hello:

I have been having muscle twitching, muscle pain, and random fleeting arrhythmias since October 23, 2008. In the past I was prescribed a diuretic called hydrochlorothiazide for hypertension. Unfortunetly the doctor (my fault as well for not reserching it) did not warn me to exercise too much. The first day I took it was the last. I was into martial arts and in excellent shape. Long story short, I exercised my way to the ER after feelings of blacking out and convulsions. I had depleted my potassium and was going into shock. They gave me pills and a IV and I recovered because I had a great immune system. Sometime months later I seen another doctor who prescribed me Norvasc( I have taken it in the past as well with no problems) I started out at 5mg. Next visit he said your blood pressure is still high so he increased it to 10mg. I went back again he said he wanted to prescribe me another drug as well with the norvasc called CARVEDILOL(generic coreg) Remebering the past I specifically asked him was it okay to exercise with this medication. He said yes. The nexxt morning I took it I was walking and a brief pain in my heart. I figured my heart was ajusting to the medicine. Two weeks later back at the office the doctor told me he wanted to increase the carvedilol from 6.5mg to 12.5 mg. I innocently went along with it. I went back to the doctor 2 weeks later and my blood pressure was finally regulated. I was temporary overjoyed. Throughout the next couple of weeks I was exercising (playing basketball routine push-ups and workout everyday) I would notice small muscle twitchings in my shoulder muscles or legs where I was exercising.I also noticed that I would heal slower when I cut myslef and even injured my left pinky which is still slightly stiff to this day. I thought maybe I was doing to much exercise so I slowed down a little, just a little. Abruptly on October 23, 2008 I remember vividly bending down in a bookstore and noticing a sharp pain in my foot muscle. They continued to get worse and I finally went to the ER because I was having trouble breathing.I seen the ER doctor and EKG my heart was 40bpm. The ER doctor took the coreg from me and threw it in the trash saying," Don't take this anymore." After that I was scared out of my mind. I began to develop a tightness in my lower left and right frontal abdomen as well. I lost my passion for martial arts and slowly took myself off the norvasc as well to see if that would stop the symtoms. I went back to the doctor and he denied it saying it could not affect me once it left the bloodstream. Maybe it was a viral infection. Now I was completly off the medications and still experiencing these symptoms. I recently had a cell test done and found out I had deficiencies in Serine, Asparagine, vitamin A, magnesium (my total antioxidant function deficient) I was recommended to take 10 different pills for 4-6 moths for effect of repletion (not medications) It has been about 1 month and still the arrhythmias and muscle pain-twitching continue.Sometimes they are not as bad as some other days.I suspect my nerves play a factor as well due to my hypertension. I am going to see my doctor today and telling him I want to be refered to a cardiologist. I am 95% sure it was the carvedilol because I didn't ever nor in the past have any type of symtoms like these until I abruptly began taking carvedilol with the norvasc. Over-exercisng , over-medication, and doctor negligence are what caused something in my heart to be peramently damaged. As a result I beleive it is affecting other internal organs( reason for deficiencies) and twitching and pains occur. I have been working hard since I was 12 and have had alot of tough jobs. Never in my life have I felt so defensless against something. I have always healed or bounced back. I am glad I found this board so that I may share my knowledge and pain with others going through related trials and tribulations. I encourage everyone to research your medictions and question assuming logic. I would appreciate any feedback and I will be posting updates as well. Thank you everyone for your kind ears.

Although I'd like to add that my leg and arm twitches seem to be connected, i.e. my right leg jerks, then it seems to travel through me to my right arm and it jerks too. It started off as little jerks that weren't very noticeable, now they are getting pretty violent.

As far as your other symptoms go, I have Arnold Chiari Malformation type 1, which can cause similar symptoms to MS and is often misdiagnosed as MS, it can be identified by having an MRI, although is often overlooked as it's not very well understood in the medical community. It's possible that this could be the cause of your symptoms, especially the headaches at the back of your head.

If you've been diagnosed with something for your twitches, I'd be interested to know what is causing your twitches as it may be the same thing that's causing mine. I'm not so sure it's caused by the Arnold Chiari Malformation.
It's been awhile since I've visited this site. I'm reading all the last posts made since I was last here. I just got done reading yours & its interested that mentioned Chiari Malformation. My little sister was just diagnosed with Chiari Malformation type 1 last year. I'm sure I don't have it because I have already had an MRI and all is fine. However, I may has something similar to Chiari symptoms. My sister was also diagnosed with ehlers danlos syndrome (which is a connective tissue disorder) as well among other things. I do believe there is a possibility that I could have this condition, due to some symptoms matching. It is also hereditary like MS. I still don't have insurances, but as soon as I do, I'm gonna get everything ruled out.

I am interested in knowing if Chiari is hereditary. What are the chances that two sisters having the same rare condition??? I do know that it is often over looked on an MRI. My sister may not have even known if the doc didn't tell her. She hesitated when giving her the news, because she felt like it was a mild form, that it was nothing to worry about. I'm glad that she got a second look to confirm it.

I'll keep everyone posted as soon as I find out any information that is causing my problems.

Re: Muscle Twitching & Arm/Leg Jerking! What's Causing This To Happen???

It's good to hear I'm not alone in the symptoms. Though mine differ a bit.

I'm having varying degrees of twitching. Some days, it's constant, other days, I only notice the muscle twitching at night or when trying to rest. I also occasionally get this sharp, stabbing pain at the back of the upper/centerish side of my head. Occasionally I get these sort of "pulse points" random pulse sensations in various parts of my body. The most often impacted area is my right abdomen or my shoulders. These symptoms make noooo sense to me and my doctor is telling me it's stress, which, I can't rule out, for life has been ridiculously stressful as of late. Plus, I'm a webMDer and I've already diagnosed myself with MS and that really doesn't help my hypochondriac self. It just stresses me out more, which if that's part of the root of these twitches, just messes me up. Also, rarely, but it does happen on occasion, the right and left side of my head kind of...numb up. It really makes no sense whatsoever to me.

And lemme just say, butt twitches? Whattheheck. This is ridiculous.

Re: Muscle Twitching & Arm/Leg Jerking! What's Causing This To Happen???

Hi Everybody, I'm new here and this is my first post.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one with this set of wacky symptoms. I read AngelofLight's description of symptoms and it seems very similar to mine. Mine started 14 years ago and woke me up out of my sleep. It was the sensation of shaking deep inside my body that I could only really perceive when I was laying in bed. I also noticed a little twitch here and there but nothing major at the time. I had a brain MRI and EEG which ruled out MS and Epiliepsy. It eventually went away (shaking took about 6 months to leave).

Over the years I've had the twitching and cramping come and go. Seems like the twitching has gradually replaced the cramping. I've also had periods when it calmed down and did very little. Sometimes my calves would twitch so much that they felt like they were "bubbling". The twitching involves every part of my body including recently my face (lips, eyelids, cheeks, neck). I've also periodically experienced the pulsing, the vibrating, crawling, burning, dizziness/vertigo, and chest pain sensations I've seen others mention.

I've been to see at least 4 neurologists in the past 14 years and no test has revealed anything unusual. I went to John's Hopkins and saw an MS specialist last year. They drew 18 vials of blood and did an MRI of my upper spine and a lumbar puncture. They also used a newly developed machine can confirm whether a patient has ever had an incident of optic neuritis, which is common in MS. All tests came back negative except my knee reflex indicates that something is a little off. The doctor assured me that whatever I have is mild and that I may never know what it is.

This past week I woke up out of a nice sleep to find my head, arms and legs periodically jerking (it's kind of like an orchestra- now the jerking joins in to play with the twitching). This really scares me because it is a new symptom.

I should also note that years ago I was diagnosed with autoimmune arthritis associated with HLAB27 gene. It seems like when I have a flare of this, that the twitching and all other stuff escalates. My arthristis condition is not very bad and the Doctor treating it (along with every written thing describing it) insures me that no neurologic symptoms should accompany it.

Anyhow, I'm debating calling the doctor but I almost feel like a lunatic hypochondriac with the most bizzare set of symptoms. I think I should probably have a test that measures the electrical activity in the muscle itself. Has anyone had one of these?

Thanks for listening to me blather on and on...I appreciate it.

I usually notice more than 24 twitches a day. It's probably more, itís hard to tell.

I have also been experiencing jerking of my arms and legs. This only occurs when I'm resting. I have notice an increase in the jerking of the limbs. I feel terrible because I feel as if I have no control over these jerks. I am thankful though that it only happens when I'm resting.

I have noticed an increase in the twitching and jerking. I'm wondering what is causing it and if it is something I should be worried about. I have already looked into the medications I'm taking and none of them have muscle twitching or jerking as a side effect. I'm without insurance right now and would like some advice from anyone who may know what this may be caused by. I feel as if this is abnormal. I have asked around to find out if this is normal. I do understand that some muscle twitching is normal (like in the eyes, etc). But what I'm experiencing is a lot and canít possibly be normal.

I also have other symptoms that could be or not be related. I have also been experiencing dizziness and fatigue. I get dizzy from standing up from a sitting or laying down position. I also feel really tired and irritable by 2-3pm. I get plenty of sleep (more than 8 hours), so I know this isn't causing my fatigue. I have also been experiencing chest pain. This has been an issue for some time now. I thought it was due to stress and/or anxiety. I'm on medications to help with my anxiety so the chest pain can't possibly be anxiety related. I do believe I have arrhythmias. I have seen a cardiologist in the past concerning my chest pain. They concluded that it was anxiety related and to continue taking and/or increasing my meds (which Iíve done both). Like I said, I don't know if these other symptoms have anything to do with my muscle twitching or jerking.

I appreciate any advice or any information anyone could give me. I hope to figure out the cause and get this under control. Thank you!!!

Re: Muscle Twitching & Arm/Leg Jerking! What's Causing This To Happen???

I have the leg/arm jerking at nighttime also. Everyday I wake up unrefreshed, fuzzy in the head and severly fatigued. I had a sleep study done ad I was diagnosed with PLMD. I was put on Mirapex and it does help a little but not enough. My Neurologist said there isnothin more he can do for me and referred me to a shrink. I am already seeing one, and have been for 3 years. I am on Cymbalta and xanax daily. I just want to feel normal and happy again.

i have the same thing big time
it goes from the shoulder either left or right then in the legs
never in 2 areas at once
its skips from one area to the other
it is a violent quick jerk then its over for a second or more
it lasts some times for a few minutes to a few days

so this is my advice first when the jerking starts get up and walk around do not lay down it only gets worse
also try some thing that a ms doctor will say don't, take a SHORT hot bath or hot shower then get under the covers in the bed this also seems to help

also one other thing that helps if you have a wife or husband have then scratch your head back and shoulders it seems to also help

last but not least this should actually be first your spouse is needed for this its love time
this seems to stimulate the brain and side track the electrical impulses in the brain that are causing the jerking in the first place
