Hi Everyone. First let me just THANK YOU all for adding your experiences here. It's really helped with my own. Okay, so here's my story. My dent is just in my left leg, and it appeared out of nowhere just yesterday. After being freaked out a bit and then finding all your posts, I calmed down. Then this morning, much to my surprise (as other people have said), I was brushing and flossing my teeth and looked down to find that I instinctively lean up against the sink with the left side of my body... Yep, and after checking and lining it up, my dent is right where the edge of the sink hits my thigh, and the exact thickness as well!
So, after reading everyone's posts, I'm going to put a couple people's theories together here... About two years ago, I was in an accident and badly bruised my thigh right there. I think that this is, indeed, a fat atrophy thing along with the "vanident" theory that someone else came up with. I think that if you have had either an accident/bruise on your thigh, or had injections of steroids or something else there, then our thigh fat tissue has been weakened and then after constant and repeated pressure in the same place over time, it has displaced or atrophied the fat there, which was already weak. Hence, the dent!
Well, it's just my theory (and I am not a doctor), but it seems to make sense after reading everyone's varying stories. Seems to bring them all together. Hope that helps some other people in the future. All your posts certainly helped me. Thanks again, and if you want to contact me to discuss more, just post here and I'll check back once in awhile. Plus, I'll be going to the doctor for a regular check up soon and I'll ask him as well. But I'm not rushing to the emergency room!
I've just joined this forum to let people know that I have a similar problem and recently discovered it's called morphea. I developed an oval-shaped dent in my left buttock and a line on my right thigh very rapidly over the summer and have been prescribed a steriod cream. I doubt they will actually disappear but it's good to know that this is not life-threatening, although frustrating cosmetically. I found this website helpful: http://www.emedicine.com/DERM/topic272.htm
Well, isn't this hilarious? I noticed the dent in the right thigh while in the shower the other day and freaked out. However, it wasn't bruised, sore, red, bumpy...nothing! I did come up with the theory that it was my new bathroom sink (vanity mirror to the left) because my dent fit perfectly with the sink, but it still freaked me out because I thought "there's no way a sink can change the shape of my body!" I found this thread of posts today and laughed out loud when I read about the Vanident? because my husband and I did the same thing! But, then I saw Laurie's post from Michigan and how she's in a wheelchair...and being semi-hypochondriac...I feel like I should get it checked out...because over the summer I had a weird tingly/falling asleep/restless-but-not feeling in my right leg that I asked the doctor about but she assured me that it was probably a pinched nerve and that taking aspirin and resting the leg should help. She didn't think it was herniated discs, etc. because I didn't have lower back pain. Well, that issue went away over a month ago, but then a week ago I noticed the dent.
I'm sure if I went back to the doctor, she will say the same thing "I've never seen this. Keep track for a couple months and then come back..." But, maybe just for peace of mind I do it anyway. I can spare a copay to see the doctor.
Hi Everyone: I was just looking for info on this problem and came across this forum, so I registered so I could post my story. I woke up about five days ago and found an indentation in my right upper thigh. There is also a squared off patch measuring 5 cm x 3 cm where you can feel a nodule under the skin and the patch of skin is hard and swollen. There is some pain. I am an RN and it looked like atrophy or muscle wasting to me as I was struck by a patient back in May at work and my body twisted into a 180 degree turn in a split second. I sustained several broken bones in my nose, had to have my nose reconstructed and now have all this pain in my neck and back with numbness, tingling and needle shooting pains in both legs, feet and toes. I had two EMGs done and two MRIs done and bloodwork. I just showed my neurologist this today and he said it is quite abnormal and ordered a CAT scan of my thigh and a bone scan. I am surprised to see that everyone on this forum is having this also. He said it usually comes after an injection or being hit or kicked, but I have not had any injections. It is quite painful to touch and I can feel the lump and see the swelling. I think the indentation is a loss of O2 to the muscles and impeding circulation flow. This is my opinion as I know what muscle wasting looks like. Never thought I would see it on myself. But I have been having more problems develop since I was hit full blast in the face by this Psych patient five months ago. I can't stand or sit too long as I my feet and toes go numb. I hope we all find out what is going on.
You have no idea how relieved I was to find this thread! I am 28 years old and pretty fit - I ran the London Marathon last year. I suddenly noticed a deep indentation on my right thigh and a fainter dent on my left thigh at exactly the same height. The earlier description of being like an invisible rope wrapped around my legs was exactly correct. I have had no injections of anything, am not on steroids, have never had surgery and there has been no trauma. I was completely baffled until I read the post about the 'vanity' indentations. I stood up at my desk at work and hey presto, the thin edge of my desk is at exactly the same level as the indentations!! I am constantly standing up to chat to collegues in the neighbouring pod. The desk curves towards me on the right, hence the deeper groove on that side. So, mystery solved. Now...does anyone know how to get rid of them?!
Hi. I am also glad to see that I'm not the only one with these indentations in the thighs. I was worried when I first saw them a couple days ago. I can't believe so many people have these "dents" but the doctors don't seem to know exactly what it is and what the causes are. I've read so many threads about people having the same thing. A lot of people have gotten MRI's done and still...nothing. I thought it might be fat and/or muscle atrophy as well. My indentations are on both thighs. The one on the right thigh is deeper than the one on the left. Some people said that it could be caused from steriod injections too. I don't take any of that. The only thing I can think of is that I had a baby 8 and a half months ago. Like most women who have babies, I gained some weight especially in my legs. I lost most of my pregnancy weight right after the birth of my daughter but I haven't lost all the weight in my thighs yet. I think with the weight loss in my thighs and the pressure I have from my daughter sitting on them has caused the indentations. I'm not sure. I hope someone is able to find a good doctor with an answer to this mysterious indentation.
I discovered an indentation going across the front of my upper right thigh about two weeks ago. As I passed my hand on the front of my thigh I felt the indentation. I first thought it was because my pantyhose was slipping and was squeezing my leg (some of them are so tight). However, I did not have on a pantyhose that day. It does not hurt or anything. I just feel "damaged".
I started working out with a personal trainer about a week or two before I felt this dent. He had me doing squats and other things. I went to the doctor and she had me take an x-ray (still waiting for results) and I have an MRI scheduled for next week. She said she does not think it's anything. I asked the opinion of another doctor and he thought it might have to do with a redistribution of fat. I am not fat though. I am slim.
I find it amazing how the internet can provide more information than these doctors. I think doctors should have a pc in their offices and when a patient comes in with a "strange" problem, they should tell the patient: "hold on--let's see if other people are experiencing this thing."
Hi Everyone; I was amazed on how many have this problem. I've had this dent in my left thigh for quite a while, at times it would ache me terribly like it did last night, all the way down my leg. I would take an advil and it would calm it down. I am on my feet 8 to 10 hours a day, which I thought was causing it, but now am unsure. I do have fybro, don't take any medicaiton, yet, cept advil. I did have back surgery 3 years ago, but don't remember any steroids. I am off to the doctors today to see what he thinks about this. Am wondering if I should set off to see the fibro doctor also.
Thank goodness I found this site! Now I don't feel alone
Will let you know what the doctors says.

Your Fellow-Dented Friend,
Fickle P
I have the same strange indentation (on both thighs but very much more pronounced on the right thigh). I've had no trauma to my thighs/legs in the past but in common with quite a lot of other posts on this subject these indents only appeared after I'd started doing a lot of regular exercise - after having not done any at all. I started going to the Gym 3-4 times a week since January 2008 and they appeared at the beginning of March.
I attribute them to running on the treadmill (for 20 mins at a time each session) and/or by using the Abductor/Adductor leg weights apparatus. Not sure why they happened to me though as I am not overweight or anything.
In common with others, I was referred to a specialist (a top Orthopaedic Surgeon) who admitted that he'd never seen anything like this before and, even after a MRI scan, thankfully nothing abnormal was discovered. So, it remains just an unexplained mystery....
I would like to know whether your doctor suggested any explanation during your regular check-up? Also, is your indent still there (as its now been some time since the date of your posting)?
My name is “Kln” and it looks like I join the ranks of "The Dented".
I am a 48 y/o female and have had the "dents" in both thighs for several months now. My right "dent" is larger and deeper than the left. It is most noticeable when lying on my side or standing up.
I experience a stinging sort of tingle in the right one at times but more often than not it is tender to the touch and burns. Sometimes the pain radiates to my knee in a single, thin, sort of line. The left "dent" is tender to the touch only, so far. There is no skin discoloration or change in temperature in or around either “dent”
As for my health, I am not overweight, I am not athletic, I do eat healthy for the most part, am not anemic nor on any kind of meds or OTC meds, nor have I had any steroid shots. I do smoke but do not drink. I do not lean against any counter, vanity or desktop. I work in my yard for physical activity but do not exercise on a regular basis.
I have had restless leg syndrome for over 20 years as well as burning, numbness and tingling in my feet for a couple of years now.
Recently (within the last 2 months) I was diagnosed with Dupuytren's Contracture, an autoimmune disease that causes the fingers to contract towards the palms. There is no known cause and no known cure, it is thought to be hereditary and is more prominent in men than in women.
I am curious to see if anyone has had a definitive diagnosis for these “dents”. I do not have health insurance so going from doctor to doctor and having multiple tests is not an option for me at this point.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Kln the dented.

Reason: forgot something
I too have joined the elite 'Dented'! About four weeks ago a dent appeared on my right thigh measuring approx 4 inches across and one inch wide, there is also a smaller one on my left thigh but this is only about one inch long. It looks like I have been whacked across the front of my legs with a cane! There is no pain or discomfort but I am concious of their appearance as it is visible through my jeans. My GP said it was probably fat atrophy, but reading some of your accounts I have not had any steroid injections or anything similar that could explain this. I am so glad I am not the only one out there with oddly shaped legs!!
Hi, new dent member back again. I have been investigating the 'vanident' theory and I can say that mine are not caused by my sink as that is about two inches lower than my dents, and neither is it caused by sitting at my desk at work because most of the day I am standing or walking around. Still puzzled
I am sooo happy to see that I am not the only one with this!
I have the dents across both my thighs. I am 24 yrs old and weigh 125lbs, and recently became a professional dancer. About 2 months ago, I started taking more dance classes and going to the gym more. After 2 really really strenuous dance classes my muscles were very sore. Then I noticed the dents within a couple days. I have been very concerned about it since. At first I thought the muscle was just stressed and swollen in that area. But it's now over a month later. If I tore it, I feel I wouldn't be able to dance on it or work out, and that's not affecting me.
I have never had any shots in my legs, I feel no discomfort or pain when I touch the area. They are both about 3 inches in length, and 1 inch wide..sort of oval shaped. The left thigh line continues out a little more.
My husband thought maybe it is dense fat? I have been losing wieght and thought it could possibly be more noticeable now
I really wish it would just go away
I'm going to see a Physical Therapist tomorrow morning to have it worked on, incase of muscle injury. But I plan on seeing a Physiatrist..that's someone who specializes in the muscular skeletal system. I will let you know what they say.
Hi. I too had lateal dents going across both of my thighs about one year ago. I went to my MD and they ordered blood work and everything came back normal, so I thought I was just going to have to live with it. But instead I wanted an answer so I decided to go and see a naturopath. He prescribed me a body detox (3 bottles of fluid and I had to add about 20 drops to a 1.5 litre bottle of water twice a day- worked mainly on my lympatic system) and I swear that after the treatment the dents were gone. He described it as being a build up of toxins in my body that for reasons I'm still not completely sure of today, caused these dents... at the same time I cut out dairy, aspartame and coffee out of my diet- so it's hard where to give the credit, but the more I researched it, the more I credit it to the detox. Hope this helps.

Hey Charlene. I am VERY interested in this Detox, can I have more information on this? Thanks!
Wow! I was kind of amazed to read these threads. I, too, have two identical indentations in my thighs that look like a loss of muscle. I have no pain and no discoloration there; just an indentation. They line up perfectly with my vanity in the bathroom where I spend time on my makeup/skin care.
This is really freaking me out to be honest. Will it go away? Did it go away for anyone?
I have the same thing. All of a sudden I have a dent in my upper thigh about 3 inches above my knee. Then I noticed that this is exactly where I press the car steering wheel then I'm using my hands. (I know, dumb idea!). But after years of doing this the tissue now has a huge indention and it's driving me nuts. I catch myself trying to do this all the time when I've driving. I have of course stopped, but wonder if this dent is here forever!
I also suffer from an indentation on my outer right thigh. I have been wondering if it could be caused by one of those undergarments that they sell for slimming your bottom and thighs. The bottom band of the thigh length ones hits right about where the indentation is. I haven't worn one in a year or so, but I'm wondering if this is a possible cause. My bathroom counter is significantly higher than the indentation in my leg, so I don't think that applies to me.
I am curious how many others that suffer from these indentations also used thigh-length "control" undergarments?
Mine is still there and I'm also freaking out! I constantly catch myself trying to use my hands while driving and press the stearing wheel against my leg in the same place. I have decided I just know all the years of doing this has caused this ugle dent in my leg. I quit doing it but wonder if the indention will ever go away. I drive 1 1/2 hrs round trip daily. Well, at least I feel better now and quit worrying I have some type of disease. These post really helped calm me to see that this has happened to others.
I wish one of the older posters would update to let us know if their indents went away all the way. I noticed that today after 3 weeks, the indent on my right leg is a lot smaller, but the one on the left is still just as prominent. I have been watching my vanity behavior to make sure I don't lean against it.
Grrrr!!!
