I'm a 44-year-old male, in general good health, not overweight, non-smoker. I experience periodic, sharp pains in various parts of my body. The most common feels like someone is stabbing me with a dart in the tip of one of my fingers, and it often shoots all the way up my arm to my collarbone. When it happens, it often recurs a dozen times or so over the course of the following several minutes. Then it will occur in another finger (often on the other hand) or in one of my toes. The same type of pain also occurs in other parts of the body, e.g upper thigh, lower back, temple, side of neck, face, testicle. This does not seem to be associated with any particular activity, as it most often happens when I'm still. It's causing me to have trouble sleeping and generally disrupting my day, as it is typically occurring somewhere all the time. I'm worried that it's a sign of M.S. or other neuromuscular disease. I've brought it up to more than one doctor, but they don't seem to be concerned. One thing I've considered is that I suffered from a severe case of Chicken Pox as a child and have had a couple of outbreaks of shingles as an adult. Please advise.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, it sounds like we're both in the dark. I also get periodic twitches, not just of small facial muscles, but of large muscles, i.e. pecs, biceps, quads. This might be in one muscle for most of a day, then in another on the next day. I haven't been to the doctor for this specific problem, but I've mentioned it during every office visit for other illnesses. I've had routine bloodwork done with no red flags. Let me know if you come up with any diagnosis and/or effective treatment.
I had shingles along a nerve in my back, radiating out from my spine. I wasn't aware of it ever coming back, and it's been over ten years since it flared up. I occasionally have sharp pains in the same area now, but more often elsewhere. One of the thoughts that has occurred to me is that a widespread, low-grade infection by the chicken pox virus could eventually deteriorate the nerves and lead to other neuromuscular disorders, but this is wild speculation on my part, not based on anything I've ever read. And I think you're right that doctors often don't understand shingles very well.
Sounds like we have the same problem. You can do a search on my name on healthboards and see all the post I have made about shingles. I have no other illnesses that have been detected but this problem with the shingles has cause some crazy episodes. I remember this past june is when i first felt the radiating pains that shoot through my body. My joints seem to pop alot which may not be contributed not sure. Also burning in all sorts of random areas sometimes i feel pulsing sensations etc. arms and legs seem to be more of where problems are and head as well.
I had my shingles same area i think. Left back wrapped around under left breast.
I am getting sick of seeing doctors. I am not on any meds for it though. If i feel like its coming back i take valtrex. i had shingles june 05 and june 06 i though it came back but it must have been the phn
you probably have phn as well post herpetic neuralgia which means pain from the shingles (that is just the area where you have shingles) all this eletric stuff we are feeling God only knows what that is.
im tired of feeling like this and debating on going to a neurologist. I am going to see an infectious disease specialist for another opinion if nothing comes of it i will wait and see how things go
