My husband had a decompression laminectomy in August of 2007 for spinal cord compression and injury related to cervical stenosis. Until that time he was completely normal and held a full time physically demanding job. Since then, he has had repeated exacerbations with cervical spinal cord edema and resulting nerve damage. He is now completely disabled. He has difficulty with walking and performing activities of daily living. His doctors also suspect a demyelinating polyneuropathy. He has been tested for multiple disorders and his doctors do not have any answers. He has been treated with Intravenous steroids that help improve his symptoms initially but then return in worsening degrees after several weeks. He also has a problem with decreased platelets, anemia and blood clots in his legs and lungs. He just had IVIG but they say it may take a couple of weeks to show any improvement. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? His doctors suspect this may all be related to a breach in the blood spinal cord barrier.
