Unhappy hand cramping +declining penmanship

I am hoping to get some help or idea where to start.
The symptoms I am having are when I write I get cramps in my hand. When I write certain numbers or letters, they end up on a couple of lines because I cannot keep it between the lines. When I close my eyelids and open them up, they spasm and it takes up to a minute at times to open them. I have an excruciating, stabbing pain in my left thigh muscle for 12 years, off and on.
Here lately I get hiccups all the time. I know that could be from excess gas or the diaphragm spasming.

The hand cramping is getting very annoying and I need to get an answer for this. I have always prided myself on my penmanship and it is getting to the point I would rather type something than to write it.

Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Re: hand cramping +declining penmanship

It sounds like you have dystonia in your hand, and possibly your eye muscles. Writer's cramp, despite the common name, is a form of dystonia. There are several medical treatments available to help deal with the symptoms and relax the muscles affected. The doctor you'd want to see would be a neurologist, preferably one who specializes in movement disorders. I don't know if the thigh pain is related, but it's possible, and after examining you, the specialist will probably be able to determine if all of your problems (including the hiccups) are interrelated.

Might I ask how old you are? Just thinking about your problems, made me realize that the dystonia symptoms also overlap with Parkinson's, although Parkinson's very rarely affects people under 40s. If you are purely experiencing dystonic symptoms, like it sounds like you are, Parkinson's isn't likely. A movement disorder specialist treats Parkinson's too, so again, they are your best bet. Don't get freaked out by my mention of Parkinson's though, I'm just giving you my thoughts, which could be COMPLETELY wrong.
I have an extremely rare form of dystonia affecting my entire body from head to toe (especially my toes!), so I know what you are going through! Please keep us updated on what you find out. I hope you get some answers and relief soon.

Re: hand cramping +declining penmanship

Thank you for responding. What I read last night was looking like dystonia. I saw a neurologist a couple of years ago for my eyelids and she was bewildered by what was happening. I have been thinking about seeing someone again. My hand is really bothering me. I really have problems with 3's and 5's. The loops kill me. Anything I have to concentrate on writing with fine motor skills I am having problems with.

I am 39, I will be 40 next April. I don't know anything about Parkinson. I fell down my stairs 2 years ago and was told I tore 2 ligaments in my ankle-there are times when my ankle tenses up and it is excruciating. Thank you for recommending a neurologist that deals with movement.

My mother thought it was possibly my arthritis (my hand) until I told her it is affecting other parts of my body. I will keep you posted on what happens. Thanks again.

Re: hand cramping +declining penmanship

I hope a movement specialist can shed some light for you. I do hope you get an appointment soon. I'm going to a new one on thursday. I just had serious episodes tonight, my mouth was stuck closed, couldn't move my lips AND my hands were stuck so i ended up typing a note to my friend with one finger, specifically so she'd scratch my lip for me! NOt feeling so good.
