Unhappy Lasting Pain

About six weeks ago, I began experiencing pain in the area of my right shoulder blade. The pain can best be described as a soreness/tenderness or burning. The soreness sometimes extends down the backside of my rib cage (both sides). On a couple of occassions, this sensation has extended to my chest (right side only). I talked to my MD about 4 weeks ago and he told me that it was likely mild inflamation and to take tylenol. I went back to my MD earlier this week because the pain had not subsided, this time I was provided with a muscle relaxer.

The only thing that seems to make the pain go away is excerise. However, the pain ultimately returns.

Any ideas what could be causing this pain? The pain is bearable, but it does seems to have worsened over the six weeks.

I read your post and am so sorry no one has given you any reply. I have several neroumusclar diseases and I go to a neroulogist on a regular basis for it. I had a muscle biopsy, spinal tap, and alot of blood work before getting a dx. You should request a referal to a neroulogist because pain is a warning sign and can only get worse if ignored. Once dx has been made the proper medications can be given to help you.
I am in my final stage and wheelchair bound, do not delay getting medical dx for your pain, tylenol is not a fix it drug and you should demand proper medical assesment for your current symptoms!
Take care, gidget

I hope you are feeling better by now. If not, may I ask: were you in an accident where whiplash could have occured? A fall? Car wreck? How old are you and do you work out? Are you in relatively good shape or not? Can you think of anything you did that could have caused a sprain? Do you sit in one position all day long or constantly repeat a certain motion? I am a massage therapist and so much neck, back, shoulder, arm, wrist/hand pain is due to overuse, strain or muscle imbalance that can really be helped with neuromuscular massage, proper stretching and addressing posture and life-style issues. A good, neuromuscular or deep tissue massage will tell you alot about your own body. You might want to try it. Good luck!

Re: Lasting Pain

Pab - do you still experience this pain? It sounds similar to my situation. My pain has existed for 8 months. I have rib cage stiffness and radom shoulder and shoulder blade pain that comes and goes without any traumatic influences.

Re: Lasting Pain

This problem sounds like me to a T!
I work at a computer a lot and have been told I have forward head postural problems and myofascial pain syndrome which I work on with numerous stretching and exercises, but you can only contort your own body so much.

I get the rib spasms which start between the shoulder blades about once every 2 weeks and at first all I can do is curl up in a fetal position. My Doc gives me 30 vicodins a month (I take one in the late afternoons when my shoulder/neck tension is the worst.)

I'd love any advice one might be able to give.

I've just pretty much resigned myslef tom the fact that I'll usually live in pain.
