pains, twitches, numbness

sorry to whine
but the problems ive had for the last 4 months come and go
and the last few days have been bad.
joint pain in my fingers and toes. the 3 middle toes on my right foot keep going kind of numb and my feet are cold.

but whats been driving me mad are the shooting pains. sharp sudden shooting pains that travel in about 3 or 4 inches. in my fingers and hands, my toes and feet, and since today in the left side of my head. every minute or so. ive taken painkillers and they did nothing. nada. nowt.
the pain in my head is the worst. it only lasts a second but its like someone stabbing a needle into the side of my head. i had it in the summer and it went on for weeks but went away again.

and the myoclonus. i know its not painful or anything. but i am twitching in various parts pretty much every 30 seconds - 1 minute most of the time or every 5-10 secnds at bad times. it feels freaky and its like a constant reminder (as are the shooting pains) that something is wrong.

just earlier this week i got a gp to finally refer me to a specialist of some sort. a rheumatologist (because of the joint pain. also have joint pain in my wrists when i move them certain ways. knees and ankles and feet when i walk) but knowing the NHS that could be months or even a year away.
i know theres a 9 month waiting list for mri here

im guessing that nothing much helps shooting pains? or calms myoclonus? that i could get without a prescription lol.

uuuggggh. still waiting for results of a urine sample sent to the lab. had kidney infection a few weeks ago and then got twinges and cystitis-y symptoms again this week.
got a sore throat today.

its just hard. everyones telling me i have to go back to the gym, and walk everywhere rather than take the bus, to get exercise, and telling me off for sleeping so much, but i am utterly exhausted. some days i literally cannot keep my eyes open for more than a few hours. and then i feel dizzy and crap.
but as i have no diagnosis so far there 'isnt anything wrong with me'

grrrr

Re: pains, twitches, numbness

I would suggest an NCV test as soon as possible. An MRI wouldn't hurt either. Don't really know what else to tell you. Sorry for all the pain, I know it sucks! Take care.

Unhappy Re: pains, twitches, numbness

dora,

I have sensory peripheral neuropathy. I've been suffering for 3 years with pain/burning/numbness in my feet/toes/legs/hands/fingers. I wasn't diagnosed until last November. It started in my feer/toes and in the last six months alone has progressed to my legs and hands. I did have one instance where the right side of my face went number for 5-10 minutes along with my right hand. Neurologist thought I had a TIA, so I had to have all the tests for that which were negative, so he dismissed it. I can't walk the golf course anymore. I'm only 47. Right now the diag is auto-immune of unknown origin.

I too have the sharp pains in my feet, legs, arms, hands, etc and what really caught my attention was that you said you had the sharp pains on the left side of your head. I too have had that. I thought it was related to my sore neck I get from sitting in front of a computer for 28 years (I am a software developer). I never even told any of my doctors about the head pain. What you said about a stabbing needle ? BINGO, me too. I would have it sometime for weeks and then it would go away, but come back agian. Haven't had it for awhile. Mine feels like someone pushed a knife starting at the top of the left side of my head down into my brain. I thought I had a anerysm burst or something the first time it happened.

Before I went on meds, my legs would twitch at night so bad that sometimes I would wake my wife up. Since I am on meds, my legs don't twitch as much, but since it has moved to my hands, my upper body will twitch now, mainly my arms.

I'm curious what meds you are on ???

I'm taking 3600mg of gabapentin (neurontin) and 120mg of cymbalta every day. Still have pain/burning/numbness in my feet/hands, but I have days where it isn't as bad but a lot where it seems worse than when I wasn't on any meds at all.

I hope things get better for you. Neuropathy sucks. There is no cure and only seems to get worse.

I'd like to know if you find out what the stabbing pains in your head are.

FYI - I'm going to start a thread about a treament that my neurologists wants to do on me called IVIG (Intravenous Immunoglobulin Infusion Therapy). Not sure if it would work for you, but once you see the post it's worh a read.

Good Luck to you

Re: pains, twitches, numbness

Have either of you (who are complaining about these similar problems) taken any fluoroquinolone antibiotics (Cipro, Levaquin, Tequin, Avelox, etc...) in your lifetime?

This class of drugs can cause all of your ailments (peripheral neuropathy, shooting/stabbing/ripping pains, periodic limb movement disorder (myoclonic jerks), muscle fasciculations, fatigue, brain fog, etc...)

Side effects can appear after you stop taking these drugs (months, sometimes years even) and can be non-abating.

Unfortunately not many people are warned of this when given these drugs, and then months later when they start developing problems, the antibiotic is never implicated as the cause. Many victims of this class of pharmaceuticals go on to be diagnosed with diseases such as fibromyalgia, sjogrens (they also cause dry mucous syndromes), etc...

Or many merely end up diagnosed with the things I mentioned in the second paragraph, never knowing what caused it. Countless people, such as myself, go on to be given them again after being hurt, which increases the damage exponentially.

Re: pains, twitches, numbness

None of Those antibiotic names sound familiar, but I would have to go back over my medical history to know for sure.

I've wondered about meds I may have taken at some point or even a flu shot I may have had. I also wondered about an anti-inflamatory I took called relafen. I took it two different times for extended periods, once for about 9 months.

I guess that's why they call it an idiopathic disease sometimes. Even if we did know of everything we took all our lives, we may still not be able to pinpoint what it was that caused our problems.
