Hi,

Besides my local classified want ads for used autos, vans, pickup trucks, do you have an idea as to where I might purchase a used handicap wheelchair vehicle for sale by owner. These vehicles are pretty expensive brand new. Any idea would be appreciated.

Maybe postings at the local supermarkets or community centers?

These won't be by owner but have you tried -

Checking with local auto dealers in your area - they sometimes can locate used vehicles for sale in surrounding areas and with other dealers as well. Maybe they can help you locate one that meets your needs.

Check Edmunds, NADA and Kelly Blue Book on the internet - they have a used car for sale section.

Also - have you looked into having your vehicle customized - some car manufacturers have special programs for the handicapped - and they are not limited to new cars. Check GM - I think.

Just some thoughts.

I appreciate your reponse to my message. I have a 2002 Toyota Camry and was surprised to find that it doesn't have enough metal in the back to hook up a class three hitch. That is what I'm told I'll need.

I've tried my local supermarket but, so far, no live ones sellng what I need.

I've already been checking Edmunds, NADA and Kelly Blue Book on the internet, their used car for sale section that you suggest, to see what some of my vehicle options would cost.

I've looked into the cost to put an electric wheel chair hitch onto the back of a used vehicle from a firm that does that in town.

The dollar signs just keep rolling on. Somehow I deluded myself into oringinally thinking that being somewhat physically challanged isn't much more expensive than my old lifestyle. Boy, did I have a lesson to learn.

Check out on-line shopping stores - somethimes they'll be on sale from estates, or something didn't work out for that individual.

I saw at a parking lot a lady w/MS had a thing called something like a chair topper? She & her DH were at a groc store & this machine looks like a turtle topper - it lifts the folded wheelchair into the topper. BTW she had a sedan.
But, she could move from teh w/c to the car seat and do the reverse.

Look under handicap auto accessories...play around w/the words and see what you find. Don't be too proud, look up used ones...they can be found. The trick is to find something you or a friend can get to to check it all out.

Good luck in the search, keep us up to date.. I'm not to that point yet, but I'm trying to find out what's there...just in case.

You could search **** motors for pick up only items in your area. Also, check craigslist online. You can find just about everything there. Search several cities near you because if it's a good deal, it would be worth driving an hour or two.
