Hi all new on this sight, looking for suggestions, i'm everywhere!

Hey all my Dr.gave me Neurotin today for nerve pain and wondering what all your experiences are with nerve pain? I am wondering also if maybe it took any of you a longer amount of time to get a Neropathic diagnosis? What tests have you had done? I am again having another EMG for my left side with my foot mainly big toes area being the worst pain and i'm truly starting to wondering if this may be something neuropathic of some type as MRI's have shown nothing. I am also waiting to see a specialist at a University.
Love, Monkey

Hey Monkey. I received a diagnosis just this winter. I've had fibromyalgia for years, but it's been in the last 2 that I've had new symptoms: numbness, tingling, weakness, burning skin. Was told just this week, after all tests were done, that I have idiopathic small fiber neuropathy. Funny you mention big toes, because last night I had shooting pains in both my big toes for the first time. As for the Neurontin, it has been a literal life saver for me. They've slowly upped my dosage, now on 1600 mg. a day. It lets me have somewhat of a life instead of being curled up in bed in agonizing pain. I've been seeing a neurologist, what kind of specialist are you waiting to see? Anne

Anne, honestly to tell you i don't know maybe a different Neurologist at the University in MI. I just know they can't figure out what is causing me nerve pain inmy leg and foot, getting to the point that i'm wondering who i see is really even a licenced Dr. And my big silly but took a Neurotin yesterday and then took my Vicodin and i couldn't even function ugh. So i am not taking that again. Things seem to work for me so fast and i'm not sure if i should even take the Vicodin with the Neurotin, the Dr. never said, but i mentally wasn't feeling any pain! My mom just said last night that i shouldn't be this bad at my age without an explanation and i need my life back! So here i wait again and everything else starts to pop up like now i have to have a hernia operation. It's like it never ends!

Hi Monkey, there are lots of causes of neuropathy, here is some known causes that can be done by a laboratory.
Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases - Diabetes, Prediabetes, Hypothyroidism, Renal Failure, Porphyria.
Nutritional Diseases -Vitamin B12 deficiency, Vitamin B6 deficiency, Vitamin B6 toxicity, Vitamin B1 deficiency, Vitamin E deficiency, Folate deficiency.
Heavy Metal Toxicity - Lead, Arsenic, Mercury.
Autoantibodies to Peripheral Nerve Antigens.
Rheumatologic, Autoimmune, & Vasculitic Disease- Polyarteritis, Systemic lupus erythematosus, Rheumatoid arthritis, Wegener‘s granulomatosis, Sjogren‘s syndrome, Celiac disease.
Paraneoplastic Disease - Lung cancer, Monoclonal gammopathy, Myeloma, Macroglobulinemia, Chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
Primary Amyloidosis.
Infectious and Inflammatory Diseases -AIDS, Lyme disease, Herpes zoster, Cytomegalovirus, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Parvovirus, Sarcoidosis

Whilst an EMG, Quanitive Sensory testing, Nerve conduction test, can show what damage is present but gives them no idea to what is causing the damage, has your neuro done any other tests besides the MRI ?

regards
Aussie

Re: Hi all new on this sight, looking for suggestions, i'm everywhere!

Aussie, thanks for all the info! It will help maybe! I have only had a bone scan in 2006 and exray in 2006 and 2007 and two plain MRIS one in 2006 and 2007 I also have had two EMG one in 2007 and i believe the other around the both MRI each time in 2006 . I am concerned about my Rheumatologist wanting to do injections in my hip for this reason as there has been no indication of bursitis like he is kinda suspecting but i am not going to have hime do this unless he can give me some proof. Don't get me wrong i trust him but not! I have had a ton a blood work to check my counts and ect. that all the normal blood work tests for but not sure if theres something special they should be cjecking. If you have diabetes or whatnot wouldn't your normal blood work be off some? Me and my hubby are never sick and we bought as house three years ago and it seems like everyones been sick since .(me being the worst) I mean i have had falls and been in a car accident but this all appeared after buying the house and not sure how to get a free check of lead ect. as i did't get a dang home inspection at the time due to finances, dumb i know. So can your Dr. check for lead and stuff like that? I am maybe just overreacting because all my problems started with low back pain and then that subsided without activity and then went down my leg into my foot, but can't find the causeand everyone says (dr.s that it's got tobe nerve,so still confused on where to go from here. Take care, P.s. The only thing in the last year i think i haven't had checked are my lungs and yes smoker here but they i think would have caught something with my last MRI as they did my ovarian cysts right! I also had an EKG about five years ago due to anxiety when i had my hysterectomy. I am kinda siding with my dad till i know differnent about the lesions i could have because the ob i see for the cysts said it's possible and while they fix a hernia they are going to try to be able to explore for that also and i have an pelvic MRI for the cysts to recheck them, so it seems like it could be something very small make big problems, i'm lost. Although i don't really think the lesions could be the cause of nerve damage hmm, Talk about a long PS. lol
