Any ideas why a burning nerve pain in hands and feet

Hello,

My 27 y/o daughter has had a nerve pain in both her feet and hands. Now it is spreading up her arms and legs. She has been to ortho doctors and we are at a loss as to what is causing this.
No other health problems that have been found through her general physician. Any ideas would be very welcome. Thank you

Bakingnut

Has she seen a neurologist? He/she would be more helpful than a GP. A neurologist can ask for a multitude of blood tests (I had 17 - checking for everything from vitamin deficiency to MS), a cervical spine MRI and xrays of my neck. Nothing conclusive, unfortunately. I go back next month for a checkup, but things aren't any better. Sometimes worse. My neurologist says that my condition is described as "an unspecified neuropathy" which probably doesn't have a cure. Hope your daughter can get to a good neuro - there are meds she can try. I will be starting them next month.

It sounds like nerve pain. She needs to see a neuro or a pain management specialist. There are lots of meds that have relieved my chronic pain- lyrica and neurontin both get rid of my burning and stabbing pain in my knee.Good luck-she is too young to have that kind of pain.

Re: Any ideas why a burning nerve pain in hands and feet

Joanne and Susan,

Thank you so much for your replies and advice. I had thought of a neuro but didn't think they dealt with this sort of thing. I guess I always think "brain" with a neuro dr. So you both have answered my question We can do that and yes, she is too young for this.

Thanks again,
Bakingnut

[COLOR="Navy"]Sorry to hear about the nerve pain, mine just start about 5 months ago burning above my knees which feels like someone put a hot piece of steel on my leg. I had an EMG which showed no nerve damage, I'm also taking 150mg of Lyrica 3x's daily. I will be making an appointment with a neurologist, good luck in getting help with this.COLOR]

Hello

This is my first post and we live in England: have you thought of Diabetes. My husband did the rounds of many specialists before he was diagnosed with diabetes and told this was the cause of the burning in his hands and feet and that the damage that had been done was irreversible. It may be worth checking out.

For SURE get her to a Neurologist...as said they will preform a lot of tests/take blood to have tested and sometimes a nerve biopsy...there should be something to at least help relieve her of some of the pain if not most...I have PN and have since 07..need to find a common ground and take it one day at a time.

Hope the best for her.

Re: Any ideas why a burning nerve pain in hands and feet

Hi, sorry to hear about your daughter. My pain started really hurting in my feet and legs in October of last year. I was referred to a neurologist by my doc. I had an EMG and have peripheral neuropathy. I've been on neurotin and tramadol which have helped in the burning pain in my feet, but still have the numbness and hypersensitive hot spots. It has now traveled to my shoulders arms and hands besides the feet and legs. I've now added amitriptyline for pain so I'm taking all three. I am getting an MRI next week to see if there is something in my cervical spine that can tell us what is causing it.

I didn't realize that I've had this for some time, but looking back, I'd lose my balance for no reason other than my brain was saying go one way and my feet were going the other. It's a scary feeling but it was the start before the pain. I've been an athlete all my life so this was a shock to me, but it all adds up now.

Definitely go to see a neurologist and make sure she tells them all the pains, even if they seem not to be related. It helps the process. They will do the blood tests and others and hopefully get your daughter some relief for the pain. Hopefully they'll find what it is and "fix it". Hope this helps. Tracy

Has she been tested for lyme disease, the fastest growing infectious disease in the U.S. ?

You sound a LOT like me...in 07 my feet just hurt...then went to mid calf a while later and the burning/numbness started....and year or so later my hands started to hurt/burn...

I'm on the max dose of Neurontin...and take something for RLS but am going to ask for something else to help sleep...between the pain and RLS I don't sleep well at all.

I too had/have awful balance...a shower is not the easiest thing in the world..and stairs are NOT my friend.

Hope everyone has a pain free day.
J
