Re: Persistent Flank Pain on Right Side

Thank you for all of that information, I'm giving you a hug. Seems you and I are suffering from the same thing. Mine just happens to be on the right side. This pretty much rules out (but does not exclude) appendicitis and pancreas/Liver/gallbladder. Now the possible causes "we" might have....

Costochondritis
Kidney infection/disease or UTI (including bladder)
Inflammation of the Internal oblique/External oblique muscles
Tiny Kidney stones like gravel/sand
Colon inflammation on either side where it bends.
Back/neurological problems (including pinched nerve)

These are some ideas I've thought also about. I drive a car with a Manuel transmission and thought this might have something to do with it. I have to parallel park my car, so I have to look over my right shoulder when doing this which seems to strain my oblique muscles. I sit a lot @ (work/home on computer) with bad posture(guilty), but still manage to ride my mountain bike 4/5 days a wk (30+ miles). I thought about my bed (11yr old bed) may have something to do with this. I'm just throwing ideas out their.

I've had this on/off going on now 11yrs. It will go away, but never completely. This is the 4th time it's surfaced this year alone. BTW, I'm right handed..

Re: Persistent Flank Pain on Right Side

@Cherley

One last question....When you lift your left leg (like putting on a pair of socks when in a seated position), do you feel like something is swollen in or around your left bladder area?

Sorry, it took me so long to get back to you. I've been swamped. It's strange how the pain will hit. I can do a lot of movements, but if I lift and twist or squat at the same time that I am lifting then it really hurts something. I never know for sure what will hurt it, but bending is very hard, yet I can do Yoga.

I've made it home (I'm a truck driver and I've been on the road for almost 2 months) and I'm going to the doctor again next week. I don't have much hopes. I think my pain actually comes from the inside as well as the outside.

Re: Persistent Flank Pain on Right Side

Cherley,

I have not forgotten you and hope you are you doing well. I've had an MRI of my spine recently and nothing was found. Doctor thinks I have a pinched nerve and diagnosed me with "intercostal neuralgia". Sounds about right.
I still have this ache, but anytime it aggravates me, I just raise my arm above my head and lean to the left as far as i can (hold for 10-20secs) and stretch my side out. This seems to help. I still have the "someone has punched me in the back ribs feeling"...

Thanks. I'm still having the pain and they are still running test. Next stop Colonoscopy. If we ever find out what it is, I'll let you all know. Thanks.

Re: Persistent Flank Pain on Right Side

everyone that is having pain in their right side flank should get a colonoscopy.. especially if u are having bowel changes with it eg.. persistant constipation or diarhea(sp?) ... my only symptoms of bowel cancer were pain and bowel changes with a positve occult stool sample.. i was diganosed almot a week ago and i am so thankful for my doctor who recognised my symptoms even though i am only 21.. cancer doesnt discriminate and can affect ANYONE! take care everyone

Cody
just diagnosed for this after 4 months of not knowing and passing out from iron deficiency anemia last week. You have Neuropathy flank pain and raiates from flank to mid back and wraps and tightens like a belt. causes insomnia due to lack of sleep from constant pain plus unable to sit or sleep.. . I;m on some heavy pain meds that are helping yet this nerve damage will stay for life as well as pain management when it decides to flare up. CapzasineHP is an OTC until you can go get diagnosed and scripts from your doctor.

Re: Persistent Flank Pain on Right Side

Lets keeps this going......improvements, changes...mine has come back now for two weeks, going on three.

I had a "complete" blood workup at beginning of July, checking for Gluten intolerance, diabetes, Pancreatic enzymes...everything is fine (at least with lipid tests)....other then a rolling body temperature and this annoying ache, I'm fine. Monitoring my body temp, it will go from 98.1*F to 99.3*F and back down again. Occasionally, it will peak to 99.7*F, but drop. I'm not sure if this is normal as I haven't checked it while feeling great. I understand caffeine, a meal, and time of day all raise body temperature somewhat.

Hi, were you tested for Lyme disease? Lyme has a tendency to cause rolling body temps.

Take care,
D

Re: Persistent Flank Pain on Right Side

Hi There, I am having a similar issue. About a month ago, I started to get a pain in my right flank, nausea and vomiting accompanied it. I've been to the emergency department at the hospital a number of times now and for many follow ups. They have tested urine, blood, done xrays and ultrasounds to no avail. They prescribed anti inflammatories and anti biotics as they though it was a kidney infection. I have since finished the medication and still have had no improvement. There are some days when the pain isn't so bad and I have an appetite but for the majority it is quite painful and I have no appetite. I've lost quite a bit of weight due to this as well. I have recently got a new family doctor and will be seeing him in a couple of weeks, so I am hoping he will be of some assistance. But no one seems to know what is going on. It is very painful and uncomfortable so I am hoping to figure something out soon. If you have any information to provide it would be appreciated, also if I find out anything further I will advise.

Cody95..... Cherley.....anyone, any updates or findings from your doctors? Mine has returned, and has been bugging me since September.

P.S, I have the exact same symptoms cody95 has.

I've recently gotten a family doctor and have been to see him once. He seems like he will be quite helpful. He is currently get my test results from the er etc. but he seems pretty confident that the problem is my gallbladder. He said not all issues with your gallbladder are easily identified. I'll keep posting as I learn more.

Re: Persistent Flank Pain on Right Side

Seems like I have the same thing as everyone else here, pain in right flank, feels like being hit when pressed on. Same nausea, etc. Hurts most in bed and can't roll over from right side to back or worse yet to left side. Had CT scans and talked to GP and Urologist as Ct located Bosniak IIF mass of 3cm, but they say it should not be causing any pain. Almost feels like a kidney stone like I had years ago, but no super severe pains. But are bad all the same and can also hurt when taking deep breaths.

Been on neuropathy meds for my legs as have nerve damage from crushing them, but that doesn't seem to help this pain. So far they either don't believe me or think chiropractor is the best thing. They won't even have me lay down and just roll over so they can feel the spasms and tightness.

At least now I know I'm not crazy now that others have the same thing. Will keep posting when I learn anything as I am having other scans MRA, MRI and lots of lab work while keeping an eye on my mass in the right kidney over the next few weekly visits and scans.

Cymbalta, Amitriptoline and Loritab hasn't helped me or anything else so far.

Re: Persistent Flank Pain on Right Side

Just got home from the ER with the same thing. It is very frustrating. All tests came back normal, they always do. I am so tired of this condition, I can never tell the difference between a bad episode or a medical emergency. Very very emotionally as well as physically draining. :/

Also, when I sit, particularly while driving a car, it feels like something at the bottom of my ribs is pushing back. Possibly from shingles, but I had no rash at all. Doctor put me on Lyrica, but it didn't help at all. My doctor is stumped. The pain is driving me crazy. It interferes with everyday activities. What could this be. Anybody else experiencing such a wierd pain? Any help would be appreciated.

Red face Re: Persistent Flank Pain on Right Side

Hello guys,

It seems I am going through the EXACT same thing as most of you. I am 26/male and have had flank pain on my right side off and on for months now. The last 2 or so of them have been none stop. Seems to be best in morning and then as the day progresses things go down hill, unless im laying on my back or in a hot hot shower.

I went into the ER thinking it was my kidney in Dec. and they ran blood tests, a urinalysis, and even did a CT to check for stones and all of it came back negative.

I was able to go to my PCP starting in Jan 2013 and he seemed to think it may be gastro related and ordered more blood work. Blood work came back fine and he sent me to do an Xray of the lower GI track with Borium (gross dye) today and 10 minutes into it the flank pain was HORRIBLE. It calmed down and went to normalish pain for the next few hours and then BAM the pain is so bad I cant even stand up straight, wrapping around my side, the worst it has ever been.

So im not really sure what to make of it. If to go into ER, wait it out the night, wait for the lab results. So frustrating!

Re: Persistent Flank Pain on Right Side

This is exactly what I have... Pain and tenderness in right flank into right abdomen and an uncomfortable feeling like its bloated on that side. If i bend over it hurts in the right side of my abdomen (i get a pain similar to a stitch about 2 inches down from my belly button and two inches over to the right). If I do push in on my flank under my ribs it is sore. I cant pin down what it is. Sometimes mine does get worse with food (or so I thought) but im wondering if its coming and going not necessarily with eating and more with poor posture (i am sitting at a desk 9 hours a day). Feels better to stretch it out. I have lower back pain on the right side as well. This right flank / lower back pain subsided with 800 mg ibuprofen like its muscular.
Because i have other random stomach pains ive tried an elimination diet because soy has caused gastric distress. On prevacid for stomach issues. Im Thinking flank and back pain is from something else... Like i might have 2 separate things happening.... I will keep checking this forum for updates...
