Post Persistent Flank Pain on Right Side

For two months now I have had a persistent pain and discomfort in my right flank area. It hurts in my lower right back and wraps aroung the bottom of my rib cage to the front right side. It feels like a vice grip around my lower rib cage in front, or like a belt tightening. Also, when I sit, particularly while driving a car, it feels like something at the bottom of my ribs is pushing back. I had CT scans, urinalysis, blood tests, and finally an MRI with contrast. all showed nothing! My doctor sent me to an Orthopedic doctor who thinks it is nerve pain. Possibly from shingles, but I had no rash at all. Doctor put me on Lyrica, but it didn't help at all. My doctor is stumped. The pain is driving me crazy. It interferes with everyday activities. What could this be. Anybody else experiencing such a wierd pain? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Persistent Flank Pain on Right Side

hi I have the same pain but not constantly , but rather it comes and goes but always lasts for at least a week. I have Small Fiber neuropathy that causes me trouble with my feet which is also a nerve problem. I just thought I had pulled a muscle because heat seems to help the severe pain of the right flank. First thought it could be a kidney problem but it stops after a week only to re-appear again in a few days. Really weird!! I really hope you find help or it goes away as mysteriously as it came. Please post to let us know!!

Re: Persistent Flank Pain on Right Side

Thanks for your reply daisymaegrif. At first I thought I had kidney problems too, but all my tests ruled that out. My pain seems different than yours in that my pain NEVER goes away. For 2 months now it is there every minute, 24 hours a day. It's driving me crazy. I'm just hoping it doesn't go on for ever. I hope your pains resolve themselves over time also.

Re: Persistent Flank Pain on Right Side

Hello Cody. I have had pain in my sides and front torso for 4 years now. All of my testing has come back negative. The "super specialist" says it could be small fiber neuropathy but not enough studies have been done on it. My pain moves around and sometimes its a cramping pain and sometimes its like an electrical shock or sometimes an intense pain in my side. It started on my right side and they said it was a pulled muscle but within weeks it went to my left side also. I also had bowel movement problems. I take 4800mg of Neurontin a day and it helps alot but not completely. Within days of starting the neurontin my bowel movements came back. My gait became better and the pain became les intenses and a little less frequent. Also any activity makes the pain worse. I have tried Cymbalta and Lyrica and did not noyice any difference. If I quit taking the Neurontin, which I do sometimes thinking the doctor might pick up on something easier if the symptons are not being masked by the medication the bowel movements stop and the pain worsens again. I would try Neurontin as it has helped me alot. It doesn't work immediadely and you have to gradually increase dosage but it is the only thing that has been good for me . Good Luck

oh my God, Amen..... this is exactly what I have been experiencing for the past month or so now. I feel the pain on my right side, just under my rib cage and it radiates to my back. ALSO, the pain worsens when I'm driving. I can't say that it's excruciating, it's more of an ache and is extremely uncomfortable. I recently had my gallbladder removed (also on the right side) for gallstones, and in january, I was hospitalized with a kidney infection but no stones were present. The only thing I can think of is the kidney and liver since it is the right side. What makes it even more difficult for me is that I have NO HEALTH INSURANCE! I feel like I need to see a doctor about this.

Re: Persistent Flank Pain on Right Side

I have that persistent pain in my right side. My pain is just below my ribcage in the back and does wrap around the side but is not in the front near rib cage. The pain is greatest below my rib cage on the side in the area where my arm hangs to the side. It is above my belt line and naval, but again on the side. I have also been diagnosed with neuropathy in my feet and I also have tarsel tunnel of the feet. I am presently taking 1500 mg of neurontin daily. I am also on Lyrica and I take it three times a day. In addition, I take Nabumetone which I originally took 500 MG twice daily but has since been upped to 750 twice daily. Although this has been increased the pain continues. I was also tested to make sure it was not my kidneys. The tests were negative. I am quite frustrated and am at my wits end. I could all the help I can get. I have Fibromyalgia and arthritis along with a few other problems. Please help if you know of something.

Re: Persistent Flank Pain on Right Side

I have pretty much the same thing, it can start anytime anywhere. I am careful about
my posture, and what kind of support I have for my back. I have to take pain medication and muscle relaxers and use a heating pad and sometimes take a sleeping
pill. It may be nerves which give me severe pain (muscle spasms). I don't have it
all the time. I find that lying down on my back for to long or sitting up too long also
will bring it on. Other than that I am very healthy and participate in bowling and
skiing and tennis sometimes. I have a very good Doctor and have had all the tests
but he really isn't sure. I am going to try Lyrica, 50mg twice a day. My insurance
will not cover it. If it works it will be worth it. I waste to much time trying to get
the muscle spasms to stop. I have never written in one of these forums before
so I am not sure that my explanation will be understood. I do well with heat,
have you tried using a Therabeads heating pad. Heat it in the microwave for 2
minutes and wrap it in a towel and put it on the painful area. This is all the stuff
I do to relax the muscles, etc! I also use Bengay. Anything that keeps the area
warm.

Re: Persistent Flank Pain on Right Side

i have had chronic leg/back pain & difficulty walking since suffering an accident 4 years ago. have had no recognised diagnosis - so can offer no help - just empathy. i also feel that medications often just mask symptoms and do not alleviate them - on top of this - myself -from being previously super fit - some seem to still assume i am imagining such symptoms which makes it worse. all i can do is offer my understanding that medication does not cure and we are all currently seeking some relief.

Re: Persistent Flank Pain on Right Side

Since May 2010 I have experienced the back pain you refer to and on consulting my doctor he said that it was osteo arthritis. My main concern was it could be something more sinister and he arranged an X Ray of my spine and chest, which he said proved his osteo arthritis theory.
Since then I have tried to find ways to relieve the almost constant pain. The doctor having made his diagnosis, simply left me hanging from a cliff with little hope.
I have gone from pulled muscles to slipped disc to suspecting that my heart surgery had left me with rib truma etc.
Now I am going to suggest something completely radical. On reading some of your earlier postings circa 2003 - 2005 I became aware that almost everyone complained that the pain was on the right side of the body with very few saying it was on the left side.
With some "off the wall" thinking I am now pondering the thought that most people are righthanded and very few lefthanded.
If this is indeed significant could it be that what we are seeing is Repetitive Strain Injuries?
Given that pressure on nerves anywhere in body can effect any organ in the body, symptoms like constipation, muscle mass loss, appetite loss and almost continuous pain, that I suffer from, makes this assumption appear plausable.
To reinforce this theory, about a year ago I accquired a further small dog in addition to the one I already had.
I walk approximately 20 miles per week and spend 14 hours doing so and of course my dogs tend to pull and jerk me in all directions with the lead in my right hand and with one small dog I have unkowningly coped. The addition of the new dog I believe could be pushing me too far.
To test this I have ordered a dog walking belt to which I can attach the dog leads thereby taking the strain from my upper body. I am looking forward to observing the result of this course of action.
Will keep you informed.

Re: Persistent Flank Pain on Right Side

My right flank pain is now resolved, and it was due to two things. The first was repetitive stress injury, as you said. I am right handed, and the strain of picking up my ever-growing little boys daily was one factor. The other problem was Ativan. That's what was making me crazily constipated. I get painfully constipated whenever I take any benzodiazepine now, so I have stopped taking anything like that (which I used to take a little of many nights per week to help me get to sleep), for over six months now. My constipation is completely resolved. The constipation from Ativan use and the repetitive strain injury, combined, were causing debilitating and frightening severe pain. My doctor prescribed Flexeril for me, a muscle relaxant which is non-narcotic and non-addicting, and it has helped me immeasurably. When I use an occasional hot pad on sore muscles, along with an Advil here and there, plus the Flexeril, I have no symptoms at all now. The Flexeril also helps me sleep and even acts like a antidepressant, unlike any other I have taken, even though I have not needed those for a long time.

I hope some of this helps, and I wish you the -best- of luck in your attempts to get answers, and to get well.

Re: Persistent Flank Pain on Right Side

Thank you for your kind response.
It's good that you confirm repetitive strain injuries as a cause. Will talk to my GP about Flexeril, it may not be recognised here in England so I might need to look for it's generic source.
You mention Activan; an 86 year old gentleman recently reminded me that years ago a teaspoon of Epson Salts (mangnesium sulphate) was often used for both back ache and constipation.
I have tried it recently and surprize, surprize, it work gently and well to help the constipation but had not much effect on the pain.

Geoff.

Re: Persistent Flank Pain on Right Side

Compression on the thoracic nerve roots can cause some of these same symptoms, but due to the uncommon occurance of thoracic disc herniation, it isn't looked in a differential diagnosis normally. After internal causes are ruled out it may be an avenue to look down. GP, ortho, or pain management would be the best route. Again it isn't common, but it happens. Good luck.
