I;m concerned about this also. My doc just upped my dose from 300mg at night to 300mg 3 times a day AND 600mg at night. I'm swelling up like a balloon.

Well, I'm glad it's not just me. I'm taking 900mg a day and after only a couple of days my husband (who now regrets saying this) told me my cheeks looked fuller. I paniced and went and bought water pills. I'm already overweight; I don't anymore fullness than I already have.

I am diabetic and have been on januvia, which works like a charm for blood sugar. It also has reduced my appetite tremendously. Did the same for my sister in law. I've slowly taken off 12 pounds in 9 months and feel good.

I'm not sure the problem with Neurontin is making a person hungry but rather it just make one tiered and lazy. I was on it for 6 years and the drug Lyrica that I'm taking does the same thing. Tiered and lazy, no energy so we just have to fight it. It's so hard to get up and do anything but it's so important that we do. Good luck!

Re: How can I avoid weight gain with Neurontin?

I've just recently been diagnosed with Neuropathy and first started out with Lyrica which made me a total sober drunk, if that makes sense. What I'm trying to say is that it made me bump into walls and dizzy-headed, couldn't think, just terrible; plus, as if that wasn't enough, it made me, in two weeks, gain 10 lbs, and it wasn't because I was lazy. I think it's a common side effect of this drug. I'm pretty sure it's on the pamphlet that comes with it, or you could just Google the side effects. I got off of it quickly just to find that Neurontin is just about as bad. I'm now weaning myself onto Tompamax along with the Neurontin and Amitriptyline, in small doses, to see what will stop the burning and tingling and weight gain. Lordy, trying to fight one problem here and gain another. Puzzling! Good luck to us all on our cocktails of choice. p.s. Topamax seems to have some dingy side effects of its own, but weight loss is one of them, for a time anyway. Hope this helps.

Re: How can I avoid weight gain with Neurontin?

I have been on Neurontin since September, I have not gained wt but i have found that losing the wt to obtain a goal has been very difficult. I do know that i also take 2500mcg of b12 daily usually with the morning dose and it helps with my energy level.

I was too until they added Tramadol. One of the side effects is often weight loss, but not an entirely good drug.
