Re: Gabapentin

this is for the original poster, for some reason if the ggapentin doesn't work out don't give try the other meds next like the lyrica and topomax is one too. I take topomax and side effect is weight loss start off at 25 mg to avoid side effects and I only take it at night to avoid them. I'm up to 100 mg and it works for me. helps w/ migraines too. good luck with whatever you end working out with. cj

Re: Gabapentin

Thanks for that advice, no34evr! The gabapentin hasn't helped so far. I've only noticed a drowsy effect along with my other symptoms now. It's like I now have a new symptom - but I'm trying to hang in there and see if (with time) it helps. I'll read up on that topomax.

Re: Gabapentin

I hope the drowsniness has worn off the Gabapentin, I hate that side effect. Hows your pain now? Are you on anything else at the moment? Big hugs, to take pain away xxx

Re: Gabapentin

Hi cocoa76, no, the drowsiness has not gone away but I'll give it a few more weeks. No, it has not helped the pain or any of my other symptoms yet but it may need to be in my system for awhile before it starts working. I'm giving it a few more weeks and if it does not help, my neuro will increase the dose, and then if it still doesn't help after another few weeks, we'll try something else.

Thanks for asking.

Re: Gabapentin

I really hope it begins to work soon. The drowsiness is the worst thing. Why can't they make painkillers that dont make you fall asleep? You sound like you are really going through it at the moment, take it easy, and I hope they start to work soon. xxxxx

Hi and happy christmas ..i've tried amatriptylene,we didnt get on at all,so next was lyrica uhuh, not for me similar to ama,it made my anxiety worse and weight,it blew me up also made me really realy sleepy ALL the time and worst of all no impact on pain whatsever..so we tried gabepebtin ..because at the time i was still working and that involved driving this was also a no go and to be honest by then i was fed with pills that didnt seem to help pain,so stopped that..next was tramadol ..the worst ever for me !! increased anxiety ,really did not feel like myself at all and sweats !! real sweats so much so my clothes would be wet. At this point i will add i also take 10mg of citalopram which i have taken for many years due to past anxiety and severe pain attacks
I was goinf to stop citalipram but when i did had massive panic and decided would not put my body through that again so i stick with it..anyway my tramodol side affects could have been due to excess serotine.
I manged my pain with cocodomol and shear mental power, but I just couldnt manage it any more as it was now also in my cervical and thoracic are as well original lumbar,so recently saw gp and talked about things ,i did not want to go opiates,so we decided to try gabapentin again and see. Well its been 2 weeks and yes it makes me dosey, also i think it ios blurring my vision abit but not sure..but it is taking the edge off the leg pain, the back seems untouched by it but arms and legs seem to be less. so for me i shall stick with it a bit and see if side affects diasappear. wishing good luck in your search ..jan

Hi, I have been on gabapentin for a couple of years. Was started on 300 mg a day but my neuropathy pain is now really severe and constant so am now on 2,100 -2,400 mg a day.

My pain specialist says that this med is the best for nerve pain. I have to agree. He also said it has to be up to a certain strength for it to work and build in your system for awhile for it to work. You may need to up your dose, in order for it to work for you. Also, if it makes you sleepy, take the higher dose at night before bed and take smaller doses during the day. That is what I do. I take 300 mg in the morning, 300 mg at lunch, 300 mg when I get home from work and 600 before I go to bed. It helps me fall asleep as I have horrible insomnia. But......it took me weeks of my body getting used to it and playing with what strengths to take because this med puts me in a stupor at work. That is one thing I hate about this med for me. But with my pain, I could not imagine living life without it now.

I am also on Loritab but it in no way helps as much as gabapentin. I only take 2.5 mg once in morning, once at lunch and 5 mg when I get home from work.

But these meds only help take the edge off.

Re: Gabapentin

Hi Nola! It's been a few months since I have been on here, thought I would give an update. I had a series of tests done at the Cleveland Clinic the last week of November along with a ton of blood work. My neurologist there is checking for sfn which is what he believes I have. I go back on Monday for all my results. It sounded like they did find something with the sweat test they did on me so I am hoping there's some news on what is going on. I was put on 25mg vitamin b6 also a couple months ago because my level was at the very bottom of normal range. I have been reducing amount of gabapentin to get off it and be put on something else. I am struggling with the weight gain I am having with it. I have gained 30 lbs since on it. Not sure what he will put me on but will let you know. Hope you had a very good Christmas and will give you another update next week!

Hi Lasvegasgrl
I hope you are doing well. I read in another thread you started taking R Lipoic acid. Are you still taking it and if so how is it working for you? I started it about a month ago, but its been a slow process for me. I can only take 50 mgs every few days because it makes my anxiety worse and gives me a headache. I have Aceytal L-Carnitine but im afraid to take it with RLA may be too much stimulation. I tried Gabapentin a few months ago, only got to 100 mgs for 3 days , made my anxiety worse too, had to stop taking it. I never would have made it to your dose.
I am so sorry to hear your pain is more severe and worse. Sometimes I think Im getting alittle better (with all my supplements) and then a few days later it comes back and it feels worse. So disappointing!
My Neuro gave me Lyrica, 75mgs to start. Im nervous about taking it , because Gaba made me anxious and I inderstand both Gaba and Lyrica are in the same meds "family". Glad Gaba is helping you. Did you ever try Lyrica, and do you know if its helpful for sfn? I get mostly pins and needles pain , and tingling up and down my legs, its in my hands and arms now , there are days when I feel it in my face and my lips tingle. ughh..I hate this neuropathy, Doctors still cant find a cause. I am otherwise healthy. But this dx (2yrs now) and chronic pain has me depressed and angry.

I take gabapentin. At first I was told I could take an infinite number of tablets to ease pain. However, I stopped with 5, 600mg tabs a day. Then my prostate caused my kidneys to back [unbeknownest to me,] causing a hypertensive crisis and kidney failure.

Once I recovered [nearly died] my nephrologist told me to take no more than 2, 600 mg tabs a day. Well, I stopped gabapentin for several months to allow my kidneys to recover, and now I take no more than 2 tablets each day. That seems to be good, and the pain is controlled with 30mg of morphine and extra strength tylenol and .1mg of Ativan. I take the tylenol, gaba and ativan twice a day, with a 15mg IR morphine at bedtime. My pain along with exercise and diet seems to be under control. For the really bad, breakthrough days, I can take up to 3, 15mg IR morphines, and I make good use of the OTC neuropahty creams. One cream is as good as the other so long as there is Caspian in the formula.

Id' not worry about the gaba, Try it and see what your think!

Re: Gabapentin

My neuro perscribed me Gabapentin for a pinched nerve, and it did help with the pain. However, it made me pretty depressed and I am generally described as happy and bubble. My boyfriend noticed my changes and brought it to my attention so I went of it. I also had a reaction, I got small red bumps all over. Hope it's better for you =)

I took Gabapentin for 1 1/2 years for nerve pain due to a motorcycle accident. 400 mg 3 x a day. Took the edge off a bit but did not get rid of all the pain. I started seeing a Acupuncturist and he said it was causing most of my pain then. Have been seeing the Acupuncturist for about two months now and am off the Gabapentin completely and the pain is greatly reduced. The withdrawal from Gabapentin was pretty brutal also.

I have nueropathy in my feet due to vascular disease. I have had two surgeries to improve blood flow but my nueropathy remained. I was placed on 600mg of GABA before bed. It made me so tired I could not get out of bed. I have now had the blessing of dealing with two great physicians; my neurologist and podiatrist. My nuero told me to take 100mg in the morning, 100 mid afternoon and 400 at 6pm. This helped a lot. We have now scaled back the dosage over the last month to 400 total and my pain is manageable. Being tired is the biggest side effect for me but was mitigated by spreading doses over a day. The podiatrist has made a huge difference! When I first saw him he tested my feet fo nueropathy and asked what pain I was feeling and where. He recommended some new balance insoles and some sneakers for more forefoot padding. He asked me what moisturizer I was using on my feet. I told him I really didn't use one very often. He said he asked because my feet looked dry and dry skin can cause additional discomfort for those with nueropathy. I told him I had tried nuergel and others but they never worked. He told me to use eucerin cream every morning and every night for a month and see if it made a difference. I could not believe the difference in 1 month. Much of the burning I had was from dry skin. I now see him every 6 months. Good luck in this. It took me a long time to find docs who could help..but I got there eventually!
